And then my phone rang.
Sighing, I frowned at the name before answering it. “What could you possibly need, Will? I left you alone as you wanted.”
“Yeah, well, how are you gonna tell me I’m going to stay here instead of home and not get me a room?”
“Will.”
“What?”
“You have a card for business expenses. This counts as a business expense.”
“Well, yeah, I guess, I just don’t like to use that card because I don’t need my ass to get hunted down because I spent more than I should have or something.”
“Will?”
“What?”
“I’m the one who’s paying your wages.”
“Okay? And?”
“Will.”
“If you say my name like that one more time, I swear to God I’ll?—”
“If I’m paying your wages, don’t you think I also pay for the card you carry? Get a goddamn room, keep hitting on the cute front desk girl, and leave me to some peace.”
“Fine, you know, with anyone else I would say get laid because you’re cranky, but that’s all you ever do.”
“Getting laid has never stopped you complaining non-stop, so why would it suddenly grant me more patience when you act like you possess a net negative in brain cells?”
“Dick.”
I snorted when the line closed and stuffed my phone back in my pocket. I then spotted Arlo’s amused expression. “What?”
“Nothing.”
“Uh-huh.”
“The last time I said it, you acted offended.”
“Yes, yes, I know. We act like siblings. I’ve readjusted my view on that after today.”
“Why today?”
“Because I watched you and your siblings and realized a noticeable similarity between that and how Will and I act.”
“Are you sure it was that and not finding out that Elijah and Milo had once ‘just been siblings’ and are now a couple?”
“Actually, that didn’t factor into my equation. How did that even happen?”
Arlo gave a small, almost helpless gesture. “With those two? Who knows. They are who they are, and they’ve always been...close. To the extent that most of the family made jokes and comments about how they were practically fit for each other. It was a joke, I think, for the most part...if only because Elijahhad never shown the slightest interest in men before. But then again, the same could have been said for Jace.”
“Wait, Jace too?” I wondered.
“Yes,” Arlo said with a laugh. “I don’t know what happened there either. But he has since come out to say he’s had an attraction to men all his life, but I suppose it took Mason for him to see that. Or at least move past whatever issues were in his head that kept him from admitting the truth. From what I’ve gathered, it was far easier for Elijah to accept he was into Milo, but he still insists he’s not interested in other men. Whether that’s because his sexuality is only attached to Milo, or because he’s so in love that the idea of being with someone else is a foreign concept, I can’t say.”
I squinted as I thought about that and finally settled on a soft laugh. “Your family is...weird.”
