Which wasexactlywhat made the fae so dangerous. I lifted my foot and slammed it down on his, and he hissed in pain. His grip loosened and I threw it off, and made it two steps down the hallway.

“Stop,” he commanded, and my feet obeyed.

Shit.

“Turn around, pet,” he ordered, and I could hear the cold amusement in his voice. My body obeyed, turning to face him. Dammit. I ground my teeth together and glared at him.

“That’s twice you’ve turned your back on me, pet. Not very clever, now, are we?”

“What do you want, Davorin?” I asked, exasperated, and with no small amount of anxiety prickling the back of my neck. Because once again, despite my best efforts, I was alone with him, and that never ended well. He could make me do literally anything, and I would be unable to resist. And we both knew it.

His eyes flicked from my face to the wall behind me, and a slight frown creased his forehead.

“Yeah, hilarious. Like I’m falling for that.”

His eyes snapped back to me. “If I wanted you to look away, I’d command you to do so.”

Yeah, there was that.

“Tell you what then,” I said, with forced cheerfulness, “I can see you’re distracted, so I’ll just leave you to play with whatever it is that’s catching your attention.”

I made it only one step this time.

“Stop.”

Fucksake, this was getting old.

“Don’t worry,” he purred, “you have my full attention.”

“Yes, that’s completely reassuring.” I rolled my eyes—which was entirely wasted since I wasn’t looking his way—and tried to ignore the way my heart was hammering in my chest.

I caught myself about to turn, but like hell was I going to look at him without being made to…which I was sure he’d do. Any second.

His footsteps whispered across the stone flooring and he circled round me with feline grace, his movements elegant and predatory in the same heartbeat.

“I could make you mine if I desired,” he said.

“You can make me obey,” I replied, curling my lip in distaste. “Nothing more.”

“I could make you scream my name.”

“You couldcommandme. Kinda spoils the romance, though, doesn’t it?”

He chuckled under his breath. “Who said anything about romance, pet? But trust me, I wouldn’t need to command you.”

Heat spiked in my core and I swallowed hard.

“Well, we’re never going to find out, are we?”

“Oh?” He raised an innocent brow and looked around. “I don’t see your mate coming to defend his claim on you. And if the whispers are true, he hasn’t even staked his claim.”

“None of your fucking business,” I snapped.

“Ah, so itistrue. Interesting.” His face grew mockingly disappointed. “Though I’d hoped to have you strip so I could search for his mark on you.”

“Try it and he’ll have your throat.”

“Perhaps.” Davorin shrugged easily. “Perhaps not.”
