The guys and I always have a good time when listening to Hayden speak. Her language is always polite and elegant, with a slightly posh accent. Considering she was part of the Boston high society before moving to our neck of the woods, I guess it makes sense.
“Thank you, Hayden. That is incredibly kind of you to say.”
There’s a bit of sarcasm on my tone, and Ray catches onto it. I hear him snorting out in laughter somewhere in the background. That stops quickly when Hayden puts the phone away and tells him something. She then comes back to me.
“Kyle,” she stars. “There is absolutely no reason for you to be an ass…”
“I’m not an ass,” I rush to say.
She doesn’t agree. “You’re an ass. But I am grateful you won’t be showing to my wedding with a stripper.”
“I purposely put that in my search for a girl, Hayden,” I snicker.
“I don’t understand.”
Buying myself a little bit of time, I cough in my fist before focusing on driving.
“I made sure to ask for agood girl.” I emphasize the words. “Not a stripper or hooker in sight.”
“Ohhhh, Kyle’s got himself a virgin,” Ray calls from the background. “I’m impressed brother!”
Hayden sighs in annoyance. “You are both disgusting,” she declares. “You better not scare this girl away and ruin my reception, not to mention my pictures.”
“Where’d you find her anyway?” Ray yells out again. “It sounds like an internet order, of you ask me.”
I roll my eyes at that. They sure are good at making me sound like a pervert of some sort. I pray that no one will say anything inappropriate to Zara when we go to this wedding.
“Kyle, if you found her on some shady site, I’d rather not know.” Hayden sounds genuinely concerned. “Or at least don’t mention it around my friends from Boston. I don’t want them to get the wrong impression.”
I bring a hand to my chest even though she can’t see me. “I am hurt, Hayden. Absolutely, categorically hurt.”
“Babe,” Ray decides to speak up. “It’s not like you and I didn’t meet on the internet. So there’s no shame all around.”
“Thank you, buddy. You’re a good friend!”
Neither one of us is concerned about what Hayden’s friends from Boston might think. After all, not like we’re gonna go to Boston for all of us to hang out at posh tea parties. Nonetheless, I decide to take Hayden out of her misery.
“I found her on theHolidatesapp,” I say.
The squeal of delight coming over the line about takes my eardrum out. It is so unlike her to show this kind of public display. Even when she’s happy or excited, she does a good job of reining it in.
“Oh my god! You are going to marry this girl!”
My arm jerks on the steering wheel, causing me to swerve a little. The person in the lane next to me honks their horn, and I regroup.
“Uh, no. You’re the one getting married, remember?”
“Kyle!” I wince in protest at the way her tone of voice is penetrating my brain. “Do you realize that Ray and I met on theHolidatesapp?”
“Yeah…”
“And what are we doing now? Getting married,” she answers her own question before I have a chance to say anything.
“That doesn’t mean…”
“Also!” She cuts me off abruptly. “Ray’s father and his fiancée met on theHolidatesapp.”
“Okay…”
