“He’s always been such an ungrateful bastard,” the man continues. “I raised him as my own, and this is what I get in return. Have kids, they say, am I right?”

I am in shock. I don’t know how to react to any of this. All the hell I’ve been going through is because this man has been trying to get to Puck.

I take a deep breath in and remain focused. I almost bring my hands to my belly, but the man catches the move and smirks.

“Steve, my man, congrats on the new baby.”

“Fuck that baby,” Steve responds right away. “I’m gonna shoot her right in the belly as soon as that money transfers.”

I gasp in shock, and my eyes fill with tears.

“What did you think, Emily?” Steve snorts in disgust. “That we’d be playing house now?”

“I do love a man who knows what he wants,” the stranger smirks. “Makes life so much simpler, I say.”

“Not like that bastard is mine anyway, Kenny,” Steve continues. “She grosses me out. I tried, trust me, but look at her. I couldn’t get it up.”

I didn’t think I could get more shocked than I was only minutes ago. I want to sob in relief, but I am scared to show any emotion. My prayers have come true. Too bad I might not live long enough to relish in the information.

“Okay,” Steve tries to change the subject. “Are you sure we can trust this guy that’s coming over?”

The man rolls his eyes but responds. “He came highly recommended. And he’ll be here in less than five minutes.”

His cell phone ringing interrupts whatever else he was going to say.

“You close?”

There’s a long pause after that. I watch in fascination as his eyes get colder by the second when they get glued to Steve’s. My former boyfriend realizes the same thing. His face gets pale and his eyes twitchy.

“I see,” Kenny says, moving his eyes to me now. “Since when?” Long pause again. “And you’re sure of this.”

When he finally ends the phone call, he looks at Steve for the longest time. My mind is going into a million directions as I try to come up with a way to come out of this alive.

“I’m sorry,” I slur my words slightly. “Is it okay if I sit?”

“By all means,” Kenny opens his arms wide, and I don’t waste any time. I slide the cardigan down my arms, feeling overheated all of a sudden, then wait.

“What’s the problem?” Steve finally asks.

Kenny starts laughing. “The problem is that you can’t legally marry Emily Stewart.”

“Why the hell not?” Steve protests.

“Because she is already married, you worthless son of a bitch,” Kenny slams a hand against my wall, and I swear plaster flies.

“How can she be married?”

“Apparently,” Kenny explains with anger in his voice, “she found the time to do that. Unlike you here.” He takes a swing and punches Steve in the face.

“Kenny,” Steve tries to recover as he falls into the wall.

I’m sitting on the couch, watching the exchange with what I’m sure is obvious fear in my eyes. I have to remind myself that them fighting like this could be a good thing for me.

“You had one thing to do,” Kenny screams into Steve’s face. “One. Fucking. Thing.”

“I don’t understand.” Steve looks scared to death.Welcome to the club, Steve, I think with sarcasm. “Who did she marry?”

“Who do you fucking think?” Kenny screams again. He looked so composed and put together at first, his behavior right now is completely psychotic.
