“It was pretty chill. What did you and Annie get up to?”

Damn. I want this to be my normal.

Gabe was off about a fever his little sister had got over night. She was with his aunt today because she wasn’t well enough to go back to kindergarten.

“Aw, poor Annie. I hope she’ll be fine soon.” I loved kids, and Annie was amazing. She was a tiny blonde girl with thebest sense of humour. For a four-year-old. Gabriel’s mother had married again later in life. She and her new husband had died in a car accident when Annie was just a few months old.

All of us colleagues did our best to support him. I even watched her occasionally when he worked his second job or went on a date.

Chapter 14

Bo

What happened at the Pink Chicken stayed at the Pink Chicken. But with Kaspar we had crossed a boundary. His presence loomed in the bedroom with us. He was there when we touched and there when we kissed. The half empty bottle of the Lone Fox whisky Noah had sent from Scotland on the sideboard whispered his name. For weeks after our night with him, I found grey hairs on the couch cushions, the floor, and my clothes.

Every single one was a tug on my heartstrings.

When I finally felt brave enough to admit that to Ollie, he strolled over from where he’d just been about to make us dinner.I had to stay late for a fan meet and greet and had only just arrived home.

“Oh, darling.” My husband hugged me around the waist and pressed his body against mine. “I found one in the bathroom the other day and almost cried.” He chuckled, nuzzling his cheek into my shirt.

“It’s so weird to admit it, but I miss him.”Don’t start crying now.

“Me, too,” Ollie whispered, stroking my back to comfort me. “I wished I had thought to ask him for his number.”

“Maybe it shouldn’t be, älskling. We know that we both liked it though. I suppose that’s something.”

“It is. And we still have each other.” He raised his face to me, and I kissed him. “We’ll be fine as long as we’re together. Like you said, perhaps it wasn’t meant to be more than that one night. On the upside: we won’t have to deal with the shedding.”

Neither of us suggested we repeat the experience with someone else.

“I love you, älskling.” I kissed him on the lips.

“I love you more.” Ollie grinned up at me. “Come on, eat your omelette. I’ll run you a bath.”

I was a shower guy but damn, taking a warm bath suddenly sounded like a great idea.

While we ate, he told me about his day at PBF, the Persson-Bright Foundation, that we’d founded after our wedding.

“We’re still working on the training camp. Finn has been an absolute treasure helping me set it all up. Let’s get you in the tub, darling.”

Ollie led me in the bathroom and had me sit on the closed toilet.

“Guns agreed to offer a workshop for goalies. The kids will be so excited.” Chatting away, he ran the bath and added a healthy dose of his favourite bubble bath. It smelled like mistletoe, which was my second favourite scent in the world. After my husband. My thoughts strayed back to the warm, spicy scent of Kaspar’s fur.

Maybe third favourite... Stop it, Bo. He’s not coming back.

I hadn’t seen him at the Pink Chicken at all. Frankly, while Veitsreuth wasn’t a huge city, it was large enough for our paths to never cross.

“Raise your arms.” Ollie’s gentle voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I pushed them firmly into a corner of my heart and locked them away.

He took my shirt off, pressing his lips to my shoulder as he dropped it on the floor.

“Stand up for me,” he instructed and opened my flies. I stepped out of my jeans and boxers and let him help me into the bath.

I groaned when I sank down in the warm water.

“Oh, that’s what I needed. Thank you, my love.”
