Frankie shook her head back and forth. “Tristan was never my best friend and I never snuck into Tristan’s room. His room was on the second floor.”

“Umm…” Zee’s forehead wrinkled, as his brows lifted. “Yes. You did. You told me that you used to sneak into his room when the twins would have friends over or when your mom would be—” Zee mimicked drinking “—or when you’d have nightmares. You said you crawled through his window over a hundred times.”

“It wasn’t Tristan’s room. It was Liam’s.” Just like Liam was her best friend.

Zee stared at her. His mouth opened, then closed, then opened, then closed. It wasn’t often that Zion Ash was speechless. In fact—that might be the first time in history—but it seemed that she’d managed to render him just that.

"It wasLiam’sroom?” he finally spoke.

She nodded.

“And last nightwasLiam,” he asked by way of clarification.

“It was Liam,” she verified.

It was always Liam.

“This is giving me life.” Zee fanned himself with both hands. "You know I love a good scandal. I want to hear all the dirty details. The dirtier, the better."

“I’d love to fill you in, but we are going to be late for brunch at Sue Ann’s Café.”

“Oh, I saw that when I was driving into town. Cute. Let’s go.”

Frankie slid on her wedges, grabbed her purse, then hooked her arm through his. As they walked down the stairs, she whispered, “I will say this, last night…wasn’t the first time.”

Zee stopped and put his hand on his chest as a look of bliss crossed his face. “This day just keeps getting better and better.”

“And wemighthave told each other we loved each other.”

Zee looked down at her. “That’s not typically something that is ambiguous.”

“I’m not sure if I was dreaming it or not.”

Zee laughed. “Oh, girl, only you. This is why you are my best friend. I love you!”

“I love you, too.” She laughed, and they finished walking down the final four steps.

She knew from a text she’d gotten while she was in the shower that everyone had already left, so the house was empty. She quickly checked on Lucy, who was curled up by the fireplace on her dog bed, and then made sure she had enough water.

When they got to the front door, a realization dawned on her. “Wait…how did you get inside? How did you even know where I was?”

“Share my location.”

“Oh, right.” She’d shared her location with Zee years ago when she signed up for dating apps, about a month after they met. She’d seen enoughDatelineto know that someone needed to have that information apart from her mom who lived across the country. Who better than her over six-foot-five bestie who happened to be a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

When she and Tristan got together, he asked her to share her location with him for the same reason, her “safety,” then without her even asking, declared he didnotneed to share his location with her, claiming that as a man he was not in any danger. It hadn’t sat right with her, but she’d ignored it. In hindsight, maybe he’d wanted her location so he knew when she was going to be home, and he hadn’t wanted her to have his so he could go wherever he wanted to without any accountability.

“And the door was unlocked.”

“Really?” she questioned.

He nodded.

That meant Tristan left last. He had the worst habit of not locking the door behind him. She’d switched the lock on their door to smart lock just so she could check it and lock it from any location.

Zion’s phone rang the moment they stepped out the front door. He looked at the screen, groaned, and sighed with a dramatic eye roll.

“If I don’t pick this up, she’ll call every bodega within a ten-mile radius to track me down.” He climbed into the driver’s seat of his rental Lincoln Navigator, turned on the ignition, and took the call.
