“Hey, you hungry?” Megan is standing at the door, holding up two bags of food.

“Yes,” I groan. “Starving.”

We sit and talk about how the shower went. She photographed the whole thing, and judging by the first glance the bride-to-be had of the photos, Megan worked her magic as always.

“Hey, you have that wedding planner’s number, right?” she asks, popping a fry in her mouth.

“Yeah, wh—” My eyes widen. “Y’all picked a date?”

She grins, her hazel eyes so much like Nate’s sparkling. We both jump up and hug.

I have two sisters, but being the “oops” baby means the closest sister in age to me is eight years older. I love them dearly, but we’ve never been super close.

I’ve never been super close to any female until Megan. We hit it off like we’d known each other for years.

The fact she’s going to be my sister-in-law and the aunt to my baby is just icing on the cake.

“What celebration did I miss?” Emma asks from the doorway.

“Aidan and I set a date.” Megan turns to her with a grin.

Emma claps and rushes in to hug Megan. “That’s terrific! I’m so happy for you. Finally got the stubborn man nailed down.”

“Yep.” Megan shrugs a shoulder. “It was surprisingly easy. I gave him some options and he said he just wanted to be married to me. Tell him when and where to show up.”

We all swoon over that comment. I love that my brother has found a woman that brings out the best in him and sees through his wounds.

Emma glances over at my desk before bringing her gaze to me. “I didn’t mean to interrupt your lunch, but I wanted to let Charley know I had a talk with the mother of the bride before she left today.”

My mouth goes dry and my eyes dart toward Megan, whose eyes are wide.

I cannot fuck up this job. Before the stick displayedpregnant, my goal was not only to find a job I could make a career out of, but to prove to everyone I’d grown up.

But now, I need this job to support Nugget too. I fully believe Nate will help financially, but my independent nature won’t let me completely depend on him.

I swallow hard. “W-what did she say?”

Emma smiles and pats my shoulder. “Don’t look so terrified. It was a glowing review. Said the facility was stunning, the food and wine pairings were top-notch, and you handled her daughter like a pro even though she’s something of a bridezilla.” She winks. “Sounds like the mom knows what’s up.”

I let out a shaky breath and put my hands to my cheeks. “Oh, thank God. You had me worried there for a minute.”

Emma laughs and puts an arm around my shoulder. “Charley, relax. You’re doing a great job. I promise, if you start to screw up, I’ll let you know. Okay?”

Megan’s eyes widen. “Are you crying?”

I nod and wipe at the corner of my eye. “Stupid pregnancy hormones. These are happy tears, I promise.”

Emma hugs me. “Go home and rest. You kicked ass today.”

“I will.”

Once she’s gone, Megan and I get back to our lunch and talk about wedding plans, where she makes me cry like a baby asking me to be her maid of honor.

A half an hour later, an unfamiliar ping comes from my phone.

I swipe at the screen and frown.

“What is it?” Megan asks.
