I did it once and the consequences have been life-altering.

In a few months, I’ll be a single mom, juggling life with a baby in tow.

I know Nate won’t abandon his kid, but the truth is he won’t be a present parent.

Still, he’s here now and I meant it when I said I wouldn’t cut him out of his child’s life.

“Hey, do you want to go to the doctor with me tomorrow?”

The slow smile he gives me makes my insides melt. “Absolutely. What time’s the appointment?”

“Nine o’clock.”

“Okay, what time do we need to leave?”

“8:45 will be fine.”

“I’ll be ready. Thank you for inviting me.”

After a moment, he reaches out and runs his thumb over my bottom lip. I hold his gaze while the pad of his thumb passes over my bottom lip once, twice, before he drops his hand.

Memories of our night together slam into me, making it hard for me to breathe.

“Good night, Firefly.”

Rule number three is going to be the death of me.

At 8:45 sharp,Nate knocks on my bedroom door.

I open the door to find him holding two cups of coffee and looking so good in jeans and a T-shirt, I want to rip my clothes off and beg him to have his way with me.

Of course, I refrain.

“Good morning. Coffee? It’s decaf.”

He grins at me, heat pooling in my lower belly. Damn him and that grin. It’s how I ended up here in the first place.

“Another fact you learned from your teammate?” I ask, taking the cup from him. Our fingers brush and I concentrate on the rich aroma in an effort to ignore the tingle running up my arm.

“Yep.” He shrugs. “It stuck with me since I’m an advocate for caffeinated coffee.”

“Me too, usually.” I sip, and the perfect amount of sugar and cream flavor the brew. “Hmmm…”

“Did I get it right?”

“Oh, yeah. I like a little coffee with my cream and sugar.”

“Why doesn’t that surprise me?”

And why didn’t it surprisemethe man knows exactly how I like…well, most anything? “It’s perfect. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Ready?”

I nod and we head out.
