He doesn’t meet my gaze but nods.

“You know,” he says after a moment, “I may have to change your nickname.”

“What do you mean?”

“From Firefly to Wildcat. Keep your claws in around the nurse, baby. I only have eyes for you.”

I stick my tongue out, and I’m relieved when he laughs, the shadows of fear in his eyes disappearing.

“We never finished talking about names,” he says.

“We didn’t, did we?”

“Have anything in mind?”

“If it’s a boy, I’m thinking Paul. After my dad.”

The smile he gives me warms me from the inside. “I like it.”

“What’s your middle name?”

“Thomas.”

“Nathaniel Thomas. That’s a great name. I love it.”

“Yeah, but so is Paul.”

“Well, what about Paul Thomas?”

His eyes sparkle. “Yeah, I like it.”

I grin. “Good, me too. Now, if it’s a girl? Lucy.”

“That’s cute. What do you think about Elizabeth? Maybe for the middle name?”

“Lucy Elizabeth. Kind of rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?”

“Sounds like we just named our baby.” He ducks his head and kisses me softly, just as the door opens and the doctor walks in, Nurse Fangirl trailing behind her.

“Hi, there,” Dr. Miller says with a smile. “How are we feeling today?”

“I’m good.”

“Still experiencing nausea?”

“No, it seems to have cleared up now.”

“Excellent. So, you’re around twenty-two, almost twenty-three weeks along.” She scrolls through the tablet in her hand before giving it to Fangirl. “Let’s get started, shall we?”

Dr. Miller washes her hands, murmuring something to the nurse, who nods and makes a note.

I have to hand it to her, she’s pulled herself together. She’s barely looked at Nate since she returned with the doctor.

Which is good because I’d have to kick her ass.

“This might be a little cold.” Dr. Miller squirts gel over my belly and rubs the probe through it. The sound of whooshing and a heartbeat fills the room. My gaze is fixed on the monitor, and my heart bumps against my ribs.

“Wow. There’s our baby.” Nate’s awed whisper comes from beside me.
