“That’s good.”
“Yeah,” he says on a sigh, “but I’m just ready to get home.”
My heart flips in my chest. “To Florida?”
“No. To Madison Ridge.”
The roller coaster in my belly is in free fall. I cover my mouth to hide the wide grin he can’t see anyway. I school my voice to tame my giddiness. “Oh.”
Good answer, Charley.
“When I say home, I mean the place where we live.”
“Alright then.”
“Didn’t you have your wedding shower event today?”
“I did. And it went better than I expected.”
“She was a bit of a pain in the ass, wasn’t she?”
I laugh. “Yes, and she’s the queen of passive aggression. Oh hey! Speaking of weddings…”
“Were we speaking of weddings?”
“Well, yeah. Sort of. Doesn’t matter. What does matter is Megan and Aidan set a date.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yep, next October. She and Emma are nailing down dates since they’re going to have it at the winery.”
“She called me earlier but I missed it..”
Pain shoots through my head, and there’s a churning in my gut I can do without.
I really don’t want to tell him this and have him worry on the other side of the country.
“Yeah, so it might have been that. Or it might have been about the incident we had today.”
Silence greets me from the other end for several beats. “What incident?”
I wince at his words that are colder than arctic air.
“Some reporters blocked the driveway and we had to call Aidan.”
All I can hear from the other end is Nate breathing. And not in a sexy kind of way, but inthe bull has seen the red flagkind of way.
“Nate, everything is fine now. All Aidan had to do was show up and they all took off.”
“Did any of them talk to you?”
“No. They didn’t even yell or anything. But they all had cameras, so I guess they just wanted photo proof of me.”
“I’ll take care of it,” he says, his words clipped.
I know that I have to let him do what he needs to do, so I don’t fight him. “Okay.”
“Are you okay? No one hurt you?”
