I change into a pair of sweats and grab my phone before heading out to the back deck. A glance at the clock tells me it’s nearly nine p.m. I hope she’s still awake.

Me: Hey, Firefly. You awake?

Charley: Yeah, just shut down work for the night. About to read my baby book.

Me: Working? Are you by yourself at the winery? Is someone there to walk you to your car?

Charley: Slow your roll, dad. I’m at home. *eye roll emoji**

Me: Okay, good. Why are you working so late? Are you getting enough rest?

My phone rings and her face fills the screen when I answer.

“Figured I’d show you proof of life,” she says by way of greeting, a smirk on her pink lips.

If I were with her I know what I’d be doing to those lips.

I chuckle and adjust my crotch. “Thank you.”

She leans back on a pile of pillows. “As you can see, I’m in bed. Have been for a while. I’m getting plenty of rest.”

God, she looks so damn good.

Her dark hair is piled into a messy bun on top of her head, and a couple of loose strands frame her face. Her tank top hugs her tits in a way that makes me wish I were a fucking piece of fabric.

She’s got that pregnancy glow about her, and my fingers ache to touch her.

Maybe I do have it bad.

I clear my throat of the desire strangling me. “How are you feeling?”

She rubs an eye with her knuckle. The move is adorable as hell. “Pretty good. I’ve got more energy, less nausea. But I’m wiped out after a full day of work.” She smiles a contented smile. “But I love my job and wouldn’t change a thing.”

“I looked it up. Nugget’s the size of an avocado this week.”

Her smile grows, lighting up her face, her free hand rubbing the slight swell of her belly. My chest expands with an ache to be with her.

“I’m starting to show a little bit. Seems like she should be bigger than an avocado.”

“She?”

Charley nods. “Yep. I think it’s going to be a girl.”

“What makes you say that?”

She shrugs. “Just a feeling.”

I grin. Her eyes darken slightly and she licks her lips.

Yeah, that’s another thing I read on the baby website. Increased sex drive.

Since we aren’t having sex, it’s probably a good idea I’m not going to be there for another week.

When I get home and in the same space, smelling her light, floral perfume, feeling the pull I always feel when I’m near her?

It’s going to be fucking hell.

I try to think of something else to talk about. “What’s got you working so late?”
