Which led her back to her current situation. With a sigh, she kicked her legs to the side of the bed and stood, straightening her clothes and hair. When she walked out into the main living area of the house, it was quiet. Too quiet. She ambled into the kitchen and found a note on the counter.
Wentto work for a few hours. I’ll bring home some dinner. Make yourself at home.
- Aidan
She balled up the note in her fist, trying to ignore the jump in her belly at the almost intimate tone to the note. Her mind was reaching for something that wasn’t there, and she needed to get over it. Aidan was just a nice guy.
Megan almost wished he’d be an asshole on some level to make it easier for her to leave. As it was, he was too nice and making it difficult for her towantto leave.
If she was going to stay here, she needed to pull her own weight. Since he was bringing dinner and she wasn’t much of a cook anyway, she would bake something. It wasn’t much but it would give her something to do.
She was rummaging through his pantry when the doorbell rang. In the doorway of the pantry, a can of mushrooms in her hand, she wondered if she should answer it. It was late in the afternoon. He was a hot—really hot—single guy. He was sure to have women on retainer for sex, right? What if it was one looking for a booty call?
When it rang again, followed by a knock on the door and a “Megan, are you there?” she sighed and leaned against the doorway. That would have been awkward.
She rushed out of the kitchen and opened the front door.
Charley smiled at her. “Hey, you are here.”
Megan smiled back. “Yeah. Um, Aidan’s at work.”
His sister waved a hand. “I can see that cranky ass anytime. I’m here to see you.”
“Me?”
“Yep.” She paused and raised a brow, her lips quirked in a half smile. “Can I come in?”
Megan blinked and stepped back, opening the door farther. “I’m so sorry, please come in.”
“I came to check and make sure my brother was treating you okay,” Charley said, crossing to the couch and plopping down on it like she owned it.
Megan smiled. “Aidan is being a perfect gentleman. He took me to the doctor this morning for my follow-up and has made sure that I eat and sleep.”
“How’s the head?”
Megan raised a hand to her head. “Better. I’ve still got a little bit of a headache.”
Charley nodded her head to Megan’s hand with a grin. “I’ve heard that ’shrooms can have an effect on your head, but I’m not sure how they are for curing concussions. Plan to use those?”
Megan looked down at the small can of mushrooms she still held. “Oh.” A chuckle slipped past her lips and she looked up at Charley. “You know that was a pretty lame joke, right?”
“Hey, you’re the one carrying around a can of mushrooms like a security blanket.”
Megan laughed and then sighed. “As far as your brother is concerned, he’s been great. Has he asked you anything about a room?”
Charley frowned. “No. Why?”
“Well, according to Henderson’s my car isn’t going to be ready for about a month. There was more damage than they thought, and getting parts for a car like mine isn’t exactly easy. Or cheap for that matter.” She blew out a breath. “And it looks like all the inns and hotels around are booked for the month or not available for one reason or another. Know anyone who might have a room I can rent for cheap for the next month?”
Charley tilted her head. “Aren’t you staying here? At least that’s what Aidan mentioned when I saw him about an hour ago.”
“Oh.” Megan drew back, confusion circling in her mind. Hadn’t he said he was going to talk to his sisters and ask around? “Well, I thought he was going to ask around. But admittedly my head still gets fuzzy at times, so I may have misunderstood him.”
Charley pursed her lips. “Well, I can check around for you. Talk to Mom, Amelia, Grace. I’d offer you a room, but I don’t live in my own place yet.”
Megan ran the small can in a rolling motion down the side of her thigh. “I’d appreciate it. And I know Aidan would as well.” She looked around his living room that had all the creature comforts for a guy but in a minimalist sort of way. “He seems to be one who likes his routine.”
Charley nodded. “Oh yeah. It’s his military training, I think. But he’s always been more stoic than my other brothers.” She tapped a finger on her chin. “Well, Noah can be pretty stoic too.”
