“Yep. I’ll be back in a bit. Will you be okay for a few minutes?”

She smiled. “I’ll be fine.”

“I’m not going to find you on the floor when I come back, am I?”

Her chuckle was soft as she shook her head. “No. I’ll be vertical. I promise. I’m going to sit down and call my brother.”

He nodded and then walked out the front door. A moment later the garage door opened. Megan crossed to the sofa and sat in the corner of it, grabbing the blanket and wrapping it around her. It smelled like her favorite fabric softener and was just as soft as she had imagined.

Once comfortable, she pulled her phone out of her purse and called her brother.

“Hey, Meg-pie. How’s the trip going?” Nate’s deep voice came through the phone, and she closed her eyes against tears. She’d really missed him.

“Well, that’s why I’m calling. I’ve hit a snag of sorts.”

“Are you okay?” Concern colored his voice.

“Yeah. Mostly.”

“Mostly? Megan, what’s going on?”

Oh shit. He only called her Megan when he was serious. Like the way her parents had done.

“Okay, I’m going to tell you but you have to keep quiet until I’m done. Okay?”

He sighed on the other end. “Fine.”

“You have to promise, Nate.”

“I promise. Jesus. Just tell me already. Wait, hold on.” There was a muffled noise and then some tapping. “Okay. I needed to tell Angie to move my meeting a few minutes.”

“Oh, shit. I’m sorry. You should have told me.”

“It’s fine. But you need to tell me what’s going on.”

She sighed. “Okay, I had a car accident.”

“You what?” His voice rose, and she pulled the phone away from her ear with a wince.

“Please, stop. You promised to be quiet, and I have a concussion.” He was quiet but she could practically hear the steam coming from his ears.

She told him the rest, including the fact that she’d be staying with Aidan. Even though she really didn’t want to tell him, they’d never had secrets from each other. Her brother was the only person she trusted absolutely.

“Are you done?” he asked when she stopped talking.

“Yes, but remember to keep it down. Concussed here.”

“I’ll charter a plane for you. Is there an airport nearby there?”

She rubbed her forehead. “I don’t know and no. You’re not sending a plane for me.”

“Why the hell not? The team uses one that I can pay for.”

“No. I’m not letting you do that.”

“Then let me pay for a room for you or pay for the car.”

“Nate, no. You’ve done enough. I love you, but I’m trying to do this on my own in some way. You’ve already sent me money, plus you’re giving me a job and a place to stay. I don’t want anything else.”
