Youngblood clapped his hand on my shoulder with a smile. “You’re a saint, Hanover.”

I scoffed. “Yeah, yeah. Whatever.”

He rolled his eyes. “Man, I don’t pay attention to that bullshit some try to pass off as news. Now,”—he gestured with his finger—“go. Take care of your girl. She’s going to need it. And get some rest. You’re both going to be sore as hell tomorrow.”

“Thanks, man. Keep me posted on Stan.”

“Will do,” Youngblood said with a nod.

I jogged off toward the ambulance and hoisted myself up into the back. Jack shut the doors behind me, and within minutes we were on our way to the hospital on the far end of the island.

Fortunately, it was a quiet night in the small hospital. There was only one other person waiting in the emergency room, so Eden was taken right in.

They let me sit with her in the triage room, where she was still quiet. It was unnerving to have her so quiet. The nurse came in and took her vitals, gave her an IV, and asked for details on what brought her in. I filled in the gaps where she missed details. We waited in silence for the doctor to come in. She leaned back on the bed and turned her head toward me. A goofy smile played on her lips. “Hey.”

I smiled at her, grateful to see she was still speaking to me. I wouldn’t blame her if she never wanted to speak to me again. “Hey. How’s the head?”

She rubbed at her forehead, wincing slightly. “It hurts. But it’s better than it was before. I must have been dehydrated. I’m feeling better since they put in this IV.”

I chuckled. “Well, there’s also some painkiller in that IV.”

“Oh.” Her eyes widened comically. “That’s why I feel so good.” She squinted an eye. “You know what? You’re really handsome. Like, really handsome.” She rubbed at the end of her nose like it itched.

I bit back a laugh. “Thank you. You’re really pretty.”

“Thank you,” she said, preening.

She rubbed the end of her nose again and leaned forward, precariously close to the edge of the bed. I braced myself to catch her in case she fell forward. “You know what else?” she stage whispered.

I leaned forward. “What?”

“I really like having sex with you. Can we do it again?”

High Eden was fucking adorable.

Before I could answer, there was a knock on the door, and an older gentleman in scrubs and a lab coat walked in. “Hey, look, it’s the doctor!” she exclaimed and clapped her hands before leaning back on her pillow.

The doctor chuckled and introduced himself, asking her several questions and examining her cuts, bumps, and bruises.

“I’m ordering a head CT just to check the concussion, but I’m going to say it’s a light one. The nurse will be in shortly to take you for the scan. How’s your pain right now? One being no pain, ten being the worst pain.”

Eden wrinkled her nose. “I would say something like a four. Maybe. I don’t know. I’m not really feeling any pain, but my handsome boyfriend here said they gave me some painkillers.” She shrugged with her palms face up. “I think it’s a one.” Something about that made her giggle, and she slapped a hand over her mouth. “I’m so sorry.”

The doctor chuckled and made a note on the tablet in his hand. “I’d say you’re doing okay at the moment, Ms. Mitchell. I’ll be back when I get your scan results.”

Before I could address the whole boyfriend comment, the nurse came and took Eden to get her scan done. While she was gone, I called Chance.

“Hey, man, can you come pick me and Eden up from the hospital?”

“Oh, shit. It was you guys. We heard there had been an accident but didn’t know if it was you or not.”

“How the hell did you hear about it?”

“Come on now, mate. You know this town. Word spreads faster than the clap in a frat house.”

“Right, okay. Eden’s getting a CT right now, but we should be good to go after that.”

“On the way.”
