She swayed slightly toward him, her eyes intent on his before her gaze averted away. A moment later she looked back at him, and the desire had all but melted away from her eyes. “I’m sorry for snapping at you that way. It was very unprofessional.” All-business Emma returned. She stood straighter, her shoulders back. “It won’t happen again.”
Before Shane could respond, Emma walked past him, and he closed his eyes for a moment before following her. He thanked God that she came to her senses and moved away from him.
He caught up to her and, in silent unison, they continued the walk back to the storage shed and the main house, although they both moved a bit slower and farther apart than they had before. His head was muddled with the closeness of her. He needed to get back into professional territory.
When she stopped to change into her heels, he paused briefly. “I’ll be tied up in meetings for the rest of the day. Take your time, get settled in. We’ll talk more tomorrow. If there’s anything you need, let Lindsey know or shoot me an email.” He booked it back into his office, ditching the work boots at the back door.
It should have been a relief that they were on the same page in that their relationship was strictly business. Instead, it left him cold and empty.
Chapter 7
Last Man Standing
The piercing ring ofher cell phone startled Emma out of her work flow. “Damn it,” she muttered.
She scrambled to pick up the phone to stop the incessant trill but a quick glance at the screen flashed Shane’s name. There was no stopping the small thrill in her belly seeing his name, even though she'd hardly seen him. He’d been in California for nearly a week.
“Hello?”
“You’re still at the office, aren’t you? Don’t even answer that. I know you are. Isn’t it like seven or something?” Shane’s deep voice greeted her. Emma ignored the tingling that danced under her skin at the sound of his voice.
She looked up and found that it was pitch black outside the windows of her office. The clock on the bottom of the screen told her she’d missed dinner by a couple of hours. “I’m doing fine, thank you.” Emma smiled and shook her head.
“Sorry. Let me start again.”
“Should I hang up and let you call me back?”
Shane chuckled. “Ha ha. You’re cute. Wait, I didn’t mean it that way...”
Warmth that had no business spreading through her body did just that. She could make out a couple of curse words under his breath, causing her to grin. “It’s fine. Don’t worry about it.”
He blew out a breath. “Okay, starting over.” He paused. “Hi, Emma. What’s up?”
She leaned back in her chair. “Work. What’s up with you?”
“Same. But it’s four here, not seven. You should head home.”
