Noah raised his brows. “I know Tim. Good guy.” Emma scoffed. “A little ambitious, I’ll give you that.”

“He’s a pushy pain in my ass,” Emma muttered.

“Hattersley is a highbrow outfit. International firm. They only list and represent the elite. Whoever is looking to buy your place is not only legit, but has some deep pockets.”

“Be that as it may, I’m not interested. I didn’t take a job in a winery to save my house and future just to sell it so easily.”

Noah nodded. “I know.” He knocked twice on her desk. “Well, I’m outta here. Talk later.”

She understood where Noah was coming from. He didn’t want to see her hurt again, but his judgment was colored by the family issues, as well. If his comment was any indication, he had faith, but she would be a fool to think there wasn’t a part of him that figured she’d fail. He’d seen her at her worst. Hell, he was on her list of people to make amends with on step eight.

There was someone she could talk to, though. A man who the old Emma hadn’t wronged, whose business acumen and judgment were sound.

She picked up her phone and brought up Shane’s contact name to send him a text.

Emma: Need some business advice. Not work related. Talk later?

Her phone stayed silent long enough that she put it down and shook the mouse to wake up her computer. A few minutes later, the gray bouncy balls popped up on the text screen.

Shane: I’ll call you later this afternoon.

Emma: Thanks, talk to you later. Hope things are going well in California.

He didn’t respond, and she clicked the button for the screen to go black. She blew out a breath and settled down to work. At the end of the day, she still had a job to do, and needed to focus on what was right in front of her.

Her past and future would have to wait.

Chapter 21

No Good Choice

Shane tapped the redbutton on his phone screen to disconnect the call. He dropped his chin to his chest and sighed. It was worse than he thought.

“What’s the verdict, son?” Alan asked from his bed.

Shane turned from the window and crossed the room to sit on the end of the bed. “The owner was less than receptive.”
