She didn’t move, just stood there with her eyes on his. Those enticing amber eyes darkened to a caramel color and her breathing changed, ever so slightly, but it was there. A dark glee formed in his chest to know she wasn’t any more immune to him as he was to her.

He raised a brow when she continued to stand there. “So, you’re going?”

Emma nodded, but a sexy smile curved her lips. She dropped the clothes she held and walked past him, all of that glorious skin on display for him. At the bottom of the stairs, she stopped and looked over her shoulder, smile still in place. Damn, she was a little minx, and he was hard as stone. Again.

“Which one did you say was your bedroom?” she asked, her voice low and sultry, the hints of her southern accent weaving through it. It was as smooth and potent as a shot of single-malt scotch.

A lightness filled his chest and adrenaline pumped through his veins as he stalked over to her. It was a combination that made him feel on top of the world. “I didn’t. But I’d be happy to show you.”

When Shane reached her, he plucked her off her feet, and her yelp was mixed with a giggle. The sound of it landed in his chest, making him feel light and carefree. He grinned and carried her up the stairs to his room.

Chapter 13

I Like the Way You're Made

Emma stirred into consciousnesswith an arm hooked around her waist and a muscular leg entwined with hers. She leaned back into Shane’s hard, warm chest and sighed. It had been a long time since she’d laid in bed with a man and felt safe, content.

A long time? Try never. She’d never been with a man who made her feel safe and content. Satisfied, maybe. She’d had a couple of relationships that had been exclusive, but they’d never crossed into the serious zone.

Whatever this thing was with Shane wouldn’t cross that zone either. The fact was, when the sun rose the next morning and they left the cocoon they were surrounded by, reality would set in and they would be coworkers only. That’s what they needed to do. Before long, there would be more employees at the winery, the renovations would be complete, and Shane would move on, leaving Emma to run the place alone.

A pang hit hard in her heart and she closed her eyes, steeling herself against it.

“What’s wrong, beautiful?” His deep voice rumbled against her neck.

She opened her eyes and mentally shook off the melancholy feeling.Get out of your head, Emma. Getting lost in her head was one of her worst habits, one that led her down some nasty paths. She’d missed a lot of life that way. Part of her sober plan was to stay present. And now, what she needed to do was what she should have done earlier. Go home. She’d leave in five minutes. Yep, just five more minutes was all she needed.

She shifted her hips back, feeling his hard length against her ass, and smiled. “What could possibly be wrong with me?”

Shane growled as he rolled her beneath him. “That’s what I’m thinking. There’s not a damn thing that could be wrong right about now.”

She shifted her legs, giving him room to settle his weight between them. His hands framed her face, his thumbs stroking her cheekbones. “But you were thinking. What were you thinking about?”

Hmmm...she might need ten more minutes. Maybe fifteen.

Emma pursed her lips and pretended to think on it. “Let’s see. I was thinking about how you may need to show me one more time how much you like me. I’m still not convinced you do.”
