“Thanks,” she murmured walking toward her car. Noah walked with her and inspected the vehicle while Emma tore open the envelope and pulled out a piece of thick paper with the KVN logo at the top.

I figured your ride could use some TLC. The attached invoice should tell you everything the mechanic did. He assured me there was a lifetime warranty. Take the repairs as a friendly gesture, Emma.

Or think of it as one less thing your boss will worry about when you work late.

Drive safe.

-Shane

Emma shuffled the papers and looked over the invoice that covered all the services Henderson had performed. Her eyes bulged at the list. A tune-up, new starter, new tires, an oil change, new wipers, and a whole list of inspections the truck needed. Not to mention the pewter-colored paint shone like a new quarter.

“How the hell did they get this done so quickly?” she asked under her breath. Henderson must have had all of his men working on her truck at once.

Noah read the invoice over her shoulder and whistled. “That’s a lot of work. Probably more than what the thing’s worth. Who pa—”

Noah’s phone rang, and he signed to her that he was leaving. “Yeah. Hang on a sec.” He put the phone on his shoulder and gave her a hard stare. “Emma, whatever that is, just be careful.”

Not having to ask what he meant, she nodded as he walked away, still dazed. By the time she returned to her office, frustration ran through her body. Didn’t he understand that he was making things more complicated? Fixing her car was a ridiculously nice gesture, but now she was indebted to him no matter how she looked at it. And that was the last thing she wanted to be to her employer. She knew in her gut he was avoiding her and now she knew why.

She called Shane on her cell phone, only to have it roll over to voicemail. Growling, she grabbed her purse and keys and strode out of her office. The situation needed to be rectified now or it would eat at her the rest of the day. “Lindsey,” she called out, “I need to run some errands, so I’ll be out for a little while. Call my cell if you have any emergencies. If I don’t make it back before you leave, have a nice weekend.”

“Will do.” Lindsey continued typing without looking up.

When Emma slid into her practically new SUV, her frustration level ticked up again. “I have my pride, damn it,” she muttered, typing in the address to his cabin into her GPS program.

Her hands tightened on the steering wheel, her body tensing from head to toe. They were colleagues. Nothing more.

It was time to remind him.

Chapter 12

Sanity Snapped

Shane rubbed his achingeyes. It was after lunchtime but he had been up and working in his home office since before daybreak. He could count on one hand how many hours of sleep he’d managed to get thanks to a bewitching, forbidden brunette. When was the last time a woman had dominated his thoughts so thoroughly and quickly? Never. Not even with his late wife.

During the night, he lay thinking, his cock so hard he ached, that he wasn’t sure how working with her was going to play out. She was one of the smartest women he’d worked with, and was more than an asset to the company. Emma could be the new face of KVN. Smart, sexy, and elegant, with a touch of mystery that made him want to pull the layers away.
