"I'm sure there is a valid reason for it."
"I need to make contact with Bombshell," I said out loud, not meaning to.
"Who?" she questioned.
"Nothing… and what did Adonis say to you when we were leaving?"
"He told me we could have both stayed and that the period shit doesn't faze him. He wishes you would open up to him."
I listened to what she said, but I wasn't going for it. That sounds like some smooth shit that I would say to a mark.
"Just ask him about it, Ny. I really feel you are working yourself up for no reason."
I threw my head back and then sighed lightly. I was going to ask him. I just needed the night. I pulled my phone out of my purse and tossed it on Do Not Disturb.
"So… how was the sex?"
I couldn't stop myself from smiling. Whether Adonis was in my life to kill me or not, I had to give it to him. He was blessed.
"Girl, his shit is so fire, but it's two things. He's not vocal, for real. Like, talk me through my nut."
"That is something you can teach. What's the next thing?" Talia asked.
I tried to find the right way to say the next thing. Between Talia and me, we didn't spare any details, though, so I had to spill the tea.
"I never in my life had a dick that wasn't snipped and tucked."
"That's it?" she said with a laugh. "Girl, that must be a family thing. 'Cause baybee, uncircumcised or not, Dom's shit is big. I pull that skin down and go to work on that big ol' thang."
"Bitchhhhh!" I laughed so fucking loud because that was just my case. "So you have been out here playingFear Factor, huh?" I asked.
"And do, and now you too, ha!"
I picked up a pillow from the couch and tossed it Talia's way. She dodged the hit and then sat beside me.
"Ny, I see how you light up when you talk about Adonis. Have you ever thought that if he did pick up that contract, maybe he can't go through with it? You are one hell of a vibe, mamas."
This is why I loved Talia to pieces. She always knew exactly what to say in the heat of a moment, but I knew better. If he received that chain from The Heart Mirage, then he was just as heartless as me. The head of teaching, Onyx, taught us to move without emotion. Everything up until this point with this man was a front. I had to place an ad in the Charleston City Paper to get Bombshell's attention.
We had been communicating that way for years. She was just as paranoid as me, and that is how we clicked so instantly. Throughout the years, we would check in once a year unless something was wrong. I had to make second contact within this year because now, besides needing to know the bounty amount on my head, I needed her to do a run on Adonis' name. I needed to know who the fuck he was for real. Again, I was being put in a situation where it was either me or someone I liked, and I was going to put myself first every chance I got.
Chapter 8
Nyoka
I only visited Spartanburg once a year. Being there for a second time felt weird. Bombshell and I would rotate locations. Once I placed an ad in the newspaper, she reached out and told me to meet her at Spill the Beans, a local coffee shop. I took off my shades and then placed them on top of my head as I sat patiently. I was on my second latte when I saw her swiftly walk through the door. She always toted a laptop around, so there was no surprise when I saw the Louis Vuitton laptop bag in her hand. This woman was probably the only friend that I had made over the years. We didn't go by assassin names. There was no Bombshell and Snake Eyes. It was simply Xia and Nyoka when we linked up.
"Nyoka…" she greeted.
I stood from my chair to hug her.
"Xia… you are getting thick, girl," I voiced once we broke our embrace.
I took my seat, and she placed her bag in the booth before taking her seat.
"I blame you. Ever since you posted that pot roast recipe in the paper, I have been eating that almost every Sunday."
That is how we communicated through the paper because she preferred it that way. I smiled as I observed my friend. The weight looked good on her.
