The animal released a snort and continued sniffing her. She didn’t know why, but being around his animal relaxed her.
“You can’t speak to me in this form,” Kamila teased.
A slight brushing of her psyche made her stop.
She let down her mental wards, staring into his eyes.
Finally,Maxius stated.
What are you doing in my head?she asked haughtily. She had heard of shifters being able to speak telepathically with their mates, but she didn’t realize that it would cross over to a non-shifter.
Proving to you that we are fated mates,he said.
“I told you that we can’t,” she replied out loud. She moved a few steps away from him. She had too much on her plate at the moment. There was no way she could add on a mate.
“Having a mate is not meant to be a burden,” Maxius said.
Kamila spun to face him and found him in his human form.
“Did you just read my mind?” she asked.
He stalked toward her and stopped in front of her. He cupped her face with his large hand. His alpha waves were hovering in the air around them.
“No, I can’t read minds. But I know what you are thinking because I have been there. When I assumed control of my pack, I didn’t think I would need a mate or have time for one, but a wise older wolf explained something to me.”
Kamila reached up and covered his hand with hers.
“What is that?” she whispered. It took everything she had in her to keep from dropping her gaze down to his erection. From the feel of it, it was very impressive. She bit her lip and tried to stop herself moaning aloud.
“When two people are destined to be together, they will be able to weather any storm that comes their way. Together.”
“That wolf sounds very intelligent.” She studied him, taking him in. “But why would fate pair me with the big bad wolf?”
He chuckled, bringing her closer to him. He looked away for a second before focusing back on her.
“Is that so bad?” His eyebrows rose.
Kamila glanced down at his mouth and wondered how it would feel to have his canines sink into her flesh. A shiver took over her body. Just the thought of feeling his teeth against her skin was turning her on.
She watched his nostrils flare.
A low rumble vibrated from his chest.
Shit. She’d forgotten he’d be able to scent things about her.
She flipped the question on him. “Wolves and witches haven’t gotten along for a while now. Why would it be good?”
“Well, this big bad wolf wants to protect you from danger.” He ran a hand down her neck and slipped it underneath her hair. He gently massaged her muscles.
“What else?” she whispered. Her resistance to him was unraveling fast. She pressed closer to him. Her hands found their way to his perfectly sculpted chest and skated up over his warm skin.
“This wolf wants a taste of you,” he growled.
Kamila’s knees grew weak.
Maxius bent down and covered her lips with his.
Entwining her fingers at the base of his neck, she held on for dear life as he commanded the kiss. His tongue swept inside her mouth and dueled with hers.
