But it could never be.

The young innocent girl had turned her smile on him, and it was then he sensed he would have to stay away from her.

He wouldn’t be able to claim her.

Tearing himself from the past, he focused on the present. He glanced around and took in the same three warlocks who had attacked him. They stood spread around the room with Kadir standing near Kamila.

“Kamila,” he breathed.

Her perfectly sculpted eyebrows rose.

“So you do know my name,” she replied.

He ignored the sarcasm that dripped from her words.

Maxis pulled himself together. He was an alpha, not some young pup still wet behind the ears. He glared at her.

Of course he knew her name. Why wouldn’t he?

“Where is Hazel? I demand to know why I was dragged from my home—”

“Hazel is dead.” Kamila’s three words were whispered.

He paused, the fight leaving him.

How could this be? Hazel was the strongest witch he knew. They had grown close in the last few years, and he would go so far as to even call her a friend.

“How?” he asked.

“You are not the one who shall interrogate me, Alpha,” Kamila deflected.

She stood from the chair and ambled toward him. Her dark-brown eyes narrowed on him, and her scent grew stronger. Gone was the young, innocent girl he remembered. Before him stood a strong witch whose hard gaze was locked on him.

His wolf whimpered, wanting to sniff the crook of her neck. Her gaze roamed his body, and it was then he remembered he had only his jeans on. He stood before his mate, shirtless and shoeless.

“You couldn’t have allowed him to dress properly?” She stopped a foot from him and glanced over at Kadir.

Kadir smirked and shrugged. “We tried to ask him to come with us, but he just had to put up a fight. At least he put on pants before he sensed we were there.”

She turned her attention to him and tilted her head back to look him in the eyes.

It took everything he had to not touch her. Surely if he did, the three warlocks would converge on him. Frankly, it was tempting to see if her skin was as smooth as it appeared.

Just might be worth a zap of lightning.

“If Hazel is dead, why did you drag me here?” he bit out through clenched teeth.

“The alpha of the Wolffang pack was brought to me because my grandmother was murdered.” Her dark irises flickered bright with flames. The air grew thick around them.

His mate was one powerful witch.

She was the rightful heir of Eternal Flame, and it would only make sense that she could wield fire.

He breathed in her scent. His wolf paced, growing irritated they were so close, but unable to touch her.

“What does that have to do with me?” he snapped.

Kamila rested her hands on her hips and narrowed her heated gaze on him.
