A rush of adrenaline flowed through her veins.

Smoke rose high. Kamila’s gaze followed it, staring up into the darkness and smiled, for it was believed that smoke symbolized the dead’s spirit moving on.

That calmness she had felt around her had disappeared. Tears welled up, blurring her vision.

“I shall see you some day,” she whispered.

Hazel was no longer around them. She was truly gone.

Kamila faced the coven. The first row knelt on one knee while the others followed suit.

Acceptance.

She was now the priestess of Eternal Flame.

These were her people, and she was to lead them.

Chapter 7

Maxius and his men had separated to cover more ground. While Kamila came into power, he, Khan, and Saku had remained in their human form and stayed on the outskirts of the funeral.

He wasn’t sure why, but his gut was shouting that something was going to go down tonight.

Maxius stayed to the shadows but was able to see his men. His gaze met Saku’s who gave him a slight nod.

So far, everything was calm.

The funeral went off without a hitch. The smoldering flames could still be seen. The fire was almost out, and the pyre was a pile of ashes.

Maxius only had eyes for Red. He liked the nickname. It certainly fit her.

Only a witch who could conjure fire could carry such a name.

Go to her.

He found his feet carrying him to her. She was speaking with the council members. A few others had stayed back, conversing amongst each other. A few warlock guards hung around, but most of the coven had started walking back toward town.

“Alpha, what do we owe the pleasure of having you here?” Azin asked when he arrived next to their group.

“Here as a precaution,” he murmured. He didn’t want to discuss it louder for fear of the other witches hearing. He was brought up to speed that the entire council knew what had happened.

“Do you think the wolf will return?” Hilda asked, gripping her cloak close to her.

“I don’t think so, but we wouldn’t want to be too sure yet until they are captured,” he replied.

Kamila’s eyes were on him. He could feel them without looking at her. The scent of her floated through the air. It was a jasmine mixed with fire.

Only his wolf would be able to scent her fire. The human nose wouldn’t be able to smell it.

“We thank you for your added protection,” Kamila said. She gave a slight nod to him before turning back to the four council members. “Tomorrow we shall meet officially.”

“Yes, Priestess.” Levana curtsied low. “It will be an honor to work alongside you as I have done with Hazel. I look forward to the next generation leading.”

“As do I.” Delano bowed to Kamila. “With as high as those flames grew, I’m sure Hazel is now comfortable in the afterlife.”

“You all are too kind. We shall meet around—”

Kamila’s words were cut off by screams coming from the temple. Her gaze flew to his, and she took off running toward the commotion.
