He bit back a curse at the hesitation and her tone.

“Athena. No need to apologize,” he said, running a hand through his hair. Just hearing Athena calmed the growing cravings. It was a good thing they were on their way to the sanctuary where he could get blood.

Soon, he would have to claim her.

“Bad day?” she asked.

“Yeah, something like that.” He glanced over at Linkin who suddenly took great interest in what was out in the neighborhood.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

He closed his eyes at the sincerity of her voice.

“I don’t want to keep you long because I’m sure you are busy.”

His phone beeped with another call. He looked down at it and saw Devin was calling. She knew they were heading to the Downtown Sanctuary. This had to be important.

“Hold on, Athena. I have to take this call.” He clicked over. He released a breath while putting Athena on hold. “This had better be good.”

“You won’t believe who I have on my line that I am going to transfer to you,” Devin announced without answering with a greeting.

“Who?”

“Clay Weber.”

“How the fuck did he get to you?” Sorin growled. He could feel Linkin’s gaze on him.

“I don’t know. Here, I’ll transfer him to you.”

The phone went silent before a deep chuckle greeted his ears.

“Well, well, well. If it isn’t the great Sorin Ludovici,” Clay’s deep baritone voice filled Sorin’s ear.

“Clay Weber. The foolish human who thinks he can eradicate my race,” Sorin snapped.

Linkin’s eyebrows shot up high, almost meeting his hairline.

“I don’t think. I know we will. The hunters are growing at a rapid pace. Pretty soon, we will rid the world of you suck-heads,” Clay boasted.

“Did you get my gift I sent over for you?” Sorin asked. His fangs descended with the memory of draining the human male. The hunger for fresh blood was rising inside him, jump-starting his heart. It beat faster with the thought of tasting fresh blood again. His body was going into hunter mode. He would need to feed soon.

“Yes. Seth was a good man.” Clay grunted.

“Yes, his blood was very enriching. A vegetarian, was he?” Sorin taunted. His words ended in a growl. A red veil slipped over his eyes with the thirst building inside him.

“You’ll pay for his death. He had a family—”

“You all will pay with your lives if you don’t leave Vegas.”

“Don’t you threaten me.”

“Oh, it’s not a threat, Clay Weber. It is a fucking promise. I will unleash the vampire nation on your little militia group. Hungry vampires will come calling, and we will drain everyone you love and hold dear.”

“Now see here—”

“No one will be safe,” Sorin bit out around his fangs. “Not your women, elderly, or children. We will attack until there are no more.”

The thirst for blood was consuming him. The car stopped, and he glanced out the window, seeing they had arrived at their destination. He tightened his hand around the device. Cracking echoed through the air. He took in the ruined phone.
