Damara sat frozen in the back of the SUV while Dreven’s man drove the truck like a bat out of hell. She bit her lip to keep the tears from coming. She had just begun to make a breakthrough with her memories. So many had returned, and now she was being stripped from her home.
“We should be fine for now. Let’s pull over for the night, Heath,” Dreven said from his seat next to Damara. “Head off road, and we’ll camp out tonight. We should be far enough from them.”
“Yes, sir,” Heath replied.
Damara glanced out the windows, having lost track of how long they’d been on the road. The farther they went, the more her heart sank. Going back with Dreven was the right thing to do. She didn’t want any of the Golden Moon pack to be injured or killed because of her.
Gavin won’t give up on us,her wolf whined. Her animal paced inside, confused as to why Damara had gone with Dreven willingly.
It’s for the best, she replied half-heartedly. She wasn’t sure who she was trying to convince.
Is it?
Damara closed her eyes, her body slowly rocking as the truck went off road.
Don’t give up. You are stronger than this. We are stronger together, her wolf whispered.
“Don’t look so down.” Dreven chuckled.
He nudged her with his elbow, and she flinched. She slid farther away from him and pressed against the door. He cursed and gripped her arm. She cried out from the tight hold.
“Don’t shy away from me. You are going to have to get used to my touch soon enough, mate.”
She flinched again at his mention of the word mate.
“You really are going to try to force me to mate?” she asked, turning to him. Her wolf lent her strength, pushing her to confront Dreven.
“Force is such a harsh word. I’m going to convince you to mate with me. I don’t think you want me to force anything on you.”
His eyes narrowed on her, and even in the dim light, she got his meaning.
If she didn’t submit and mate with him, then he would indeed force her.
She shifted away and stared out the window, watching the trees slowly go by. Within minutes, Heath parked the truck.
“This should be good enough,” Jeff, the other enforcer in the front seat announced.
“Let’s set up camp. We can get some sleep before making the long trip home.” Dreven got out of the truck and slammed the door shut.
His enforcers followed and exited the vehicle, leaving her alone.
Looking out the window around the truck, Damara didn’t find anything that appeared remotely familiar. She blew out a deep breath and willed herself to remain strong.
She glanced down at the borrowed clothes Dreven had given her when they’d arrived at the truck. An oversized t-shirt and sweatpants. She didn’t know if she would want to continue the trip naked.
Her door swung open, and Dreven stood before her. He held out his hand for her, but she remained frozen in place, staring at it.
I love you, Damara.Gavin’s words rang clear in her head. The memory of him braced over her came rushing forward. The vulnerability and sincerity of his words had radiated brightly in his eyes while he’d pushed deep inside her.
“Gavin is going to come for me,” she whispered, finding strength in herself. Saying the words out loud comforted her, for she knew it to be true.
“What did you say?” Dreven snapped, narrowing his eyes on her.
“I said, Gavin is going to come for me. He’s my fated mate,” she said, this time her voice stronger. She returned Dreven’s stare. Her heart thumped harder, knowing the risk she was taking at her admission. “He’s not going to rest until I’m back home. Just let me go, Dreven.”
“Not happening. If he comes, then I’ll just have to deal with him.” Dreven reached in the truck and grabbed her. He yanked on her arm, dragging her forward.
“No!” she hollered, fighting back. Her animal gave her more power to fight. “Let me go!”
