Damara swiveled her eyes back to Gavin who in turn nodded to the cellular phone. She swiped her finger across the glass screen and searched for Dreven’s number. Damara took a deep breath, knowing what Gavin wanted.

He wanted her away from the other alpha who was sniffing around her.

Damara hit Dreven’s name and placed the phone to her ear. Gavin stood from his kneeling position and paced the room.

“Brianna?” Dreven’s voice came on the line after one ring.

“Yeah, it’s me.” She looked down at the floor, not wanting to see Gavin’s response to her on the phone. Jealousy and anger rolled off him. With their sensitive shifter hearing, she was sure everyone in the room could hear Dreven’s side of the conversation.

“Are you okay?” His voice held a small hint of worry, and she relaxed a little. Guilt filled her when she thought of how she’d been ignoring his calls.

“Yes, Alpha.”

A small growl escaped Gavin’s chest. She swung her gaze to him and saw his wolf brimming in his eyes from where she sat. “I found my family.”

There was a brief pause on the line before Dreven spoke. She closed her eyes, waiting for him to respond.

“Your family?”

“Yes. I found my parents.” She opened her eyes and smiled at them; they seemed to relax into each other.

“That’s great, Brianna—”

“My real name is Damara,” she announced, cutting him off. She was proud to share her true identity. She had tried for so long to just remember her name. Now that she knew, she wanted everyone to know who she was. “Damara Jackson.”

“It’s going to be hard to get used to calling you that Bri—Damara.”

The conversation paused. She sighed, knowing what his next question would be. She had made him a promise.

“I figured I should go by my given name. I’ve had a few small breakthroughs in my memory—”

“Damara. Are you mated? Any pups?” Dreven wasn’t a wolf who held his tongue. He would get right to the point.

She had brushed him off for so long now with the excuse of wanting to know if she was already taken.

She squeezed her eyes tight before opening them. She sensed Gavin’s eyes on her. She glanced up, and the scowl on his face let her know he’d heard Dreven.

There was no way she could lie to Dreven.

“No. I’m not mated. No pups.” She locked eyes with Gavin’s, and his face darkened.

It was the truth.

She was not mated, and even though she had deep feelings that she was supposed to be with Gavin, and brief snippets flying past in her mind, she was left confused. How did she know what was real and what was fantasy?

Her heart began to break into tiny pieces. Even though she had made love with Gavin and didn’t want to leave, there was that one small problem.

She had made a promise.

If there is no mate or pups, then I will return to Wesson and I will mate with you.

“Where are you? You know I wanted to send one of my men with you to search for your family.” Dreven’s voice deepened, displaying his displeasure of her leaving without an escort. “I’ll come to you.”

“Wait! I was to be mated before I disappeared, Dreven.” She bit her lip as she waited for his response to her announcement.

Gavin stood next to her, and she grew nervous. She avoided his look and glanced at her parents. Her mother appeared just as anxious as she felt.

“If you don’t have your memory, how do you know?” he snapped, his voice growing cold. “If you were to be mated, why wasn’t it completed? There was no mating mark on you, and it’s been years. I’m coming to get you.”
