Gavin sensed his beta arrive at his side. Spencer didn’t speak but kept his attention on both Gavin and Solon. This was a problem. The enforcers were to ensure that the pack remained safe and secure, and for an unknown wolf to get past the enforcers, it was downright unacceptable and they knew it.

“I can’t explain why there was a wolf on the property, Alpha, but I will personally get to the bottom of how he got there.” Solon’s eyes flashed to Gavin.

“See that you do,” Gavin growled. He wouldn’t tolerate another mistake. “If it happens again, you will answer to me. Is that understood?”

“Yes, Alpha.” Solon nodded before turning and rushing off. He barked orders to other enforcers, heading toward the woods.

“You saw him?” Spencer asked as they both glanced around at the pack members who still lingered.

“No, but I heard his growls and saw his silhouette in the shadows. He was headed straight for Damara.”

A curse flew from Spencer lips at the announcement.

Gavin was livid. Why was a random wolf on their property, and why was he going after Damara? His gaze searched for her and found her standing with her parents in conversation with a few members of the pack.

His feet automatically carried him over to her. The wolf in him wanted to make sure she was safe and unharmed. He took her in while she spoke to her parents.

He slowed his stride as he drew closer to her.

“Excuse me.” He nodded to the group. He gently cupped Damara’s elbow and pulled her away from them. “Hope you don’t mind if I steal her from you.”

“But of course, Alpha.” Irvin said with a small smile. “Keep her safe.”

Gavin nodded. Irvin didn’t know how his words had touched a special cord in Gavin’s heart.

“What’s going on?” she asked as he tugged her beside him.

He wanted to get her out of hearing distance from her parents. He smiled and tipped his head at a few pack members who walked passed them.

“Who was the wolf?” he asked, leading her across the greenery and toward the alpha’s house. It was a house that he currently occupied alone. His parents had moved deep in the woods that they considered their retirement residence. The alpha’s house was meant for the leader of the pack and his family.

It was to be their home.

“I don’t know—”

Her voice cut off, and he paused and turned to look at her. She stood in place, frozen, staring at the house with a pained expression on her face.

“What is it?” he asked, moving to her side.

Her wide eyes took in the house. The pack had arrived on the other side of the woods for the run, and it always ended at the alpha home where members could stay and socialize at the lodge that was located on the edge of the alpha’s property.

The lodge belonged to the pack and provided a place for members to congregate. Specialized events were held there, and it was a place for the community to relax. Most of the wolves lived near their lands. While some had moved farther out or even in the neighboring towns, the lodge was a general meeting place for the pack.

“This house. I saw it in my dream,” she whispered, blinking.

“What about the house?” he asked, brushing her hair from her face and tucking it behind her ear.

Her eyes flickered to his before turning back to the home. “Nothing. It’s just it feels familiar here. I’m sure you’re going to say that I’ve been here before. But it’s still funny, not having any true memory of the place besides from my dream,” she murmured and shook her head. “And then knowing that you probably spent a lot of time here but I can’t remember.”

“Well, come on. We need to talk about what happened in the woods.” He grabbed her hand and gently pulled her behind him up the back porch and through the door. He didn’t want to stress her any further. She had spent plenty of time in the house preparing for the day that she would become his mate.
