The answer came back immediately.

Are you serious?

I am. He's a natural, and he loves it.

Heck yeah. I can call.

You'll probably have to too. But you do the accident now, and I'll get the ball rolling at the school. You can pick it up when you have time.

Thanks.

His reply was short, but she had no doubt it was heartfelt.

"I have a couple of phone calls to make, so I'm going to see if Dr. Terry is okay with you shadowing her while I do that, okay?" Shelifted her brows at Mason, who had been quiet through her text exchange.

"Sure." He shrugged his shoulder, like it didn't matter who he was with, as long as he was in the thick of the whole medical stuff.

As she suspected, Dr. Terry was perfectly fine having Mason tag along.

Hannah was thankful that Tuesdays were their busy mornings where they took appointments and walk-ins, and she had been on duty today. If she hadn't been, she wondered what in the world Ben would've done.

Chapter Thirteen

Ben walked into the community building for his first meeting with Hannah, unsure of what to expect.

He'd given the clinic a check for Mason, of course, but he felt bad because Hannah wasn't supposed to be on duty. She wasn't getting paid to treat him. Still, he couldn't deny that he was appreciative of the care she'd given, but even more so, she'd been able to connect with Mason in a way that so many people hadn't since they'd moved here.

Then, he’d dropped Mason off and Hannah had taken him under her wing and started the ball rolling for a work-study credit class with the school. He owed her. And admired her.

He hadn't considered allowing Mason to be out of school on a work-study program. Not until Hannah had suggested it.

"It looks like you beat me," Hannah said from behind him, causing him to turn around.

"I didn't realize it was a race."

She lifted her shoulder. "It's not. I just... usually, I'm the first person anywhere. It's an odd quirk I have where if I'm not a half an hour early, I feel like I'm late."

He smiled and nodded. That suited her Type A personality. The personality that surely drove her to become a doctor.

"I have a tendency to be early as well." He paused and then closed his mouth. He'd almost said that that was one of the things he and his ex had always disagreed on. He believed being early was a sign of respect to whoever the person was meeting. She was perpetually late for everything, and he felt like it was disrespectful. She felt like there wasn't anything wrong with it, although she couldn't justify or even excuse the habit.

"I guess since we're both here, we can get started early," she said, smiling as she set a bag down on the table.

"Looks like you brought things to take notes with," he said, wondering if he should've brought something. His hands were empty. He hadn't even brought a pen.

"I have a tendency to not remember things unless I write them down."

"I see. Before we get started, I did want to thank you for what you did the other night with Mason."

She waved a hand in the air, as he figured she would. "It's no big deal. That's my job."

"It's not your job that late at night. You saved us a two-hour trip down the mountain. And it's more than what you did stitching him up."

She pulled things out of the bag and brushed off his comment. But he didn't want to let it go.

"Since we've moved here, Mason has struggled. Actually, he was struggling far before we moved. And I hadn't considered giving him some kind of interest like that. I've talked with the school, and at first, they were reluctant to allow him to change his schedule."

"When I spoke with them, they said they didn't reward bad behavior with perks that not every student got." She rolled her eyes and lifted her chin. "But I told them that he had a knack and a gift for medicine, and it wasn't up to them to dictate or keep someone from their calling."
