‘There’s four. All close to here, though this is the nearest one to town.’
‘Ben would be ideal, then. I can vouch for his manner and his efficiency. It’s up to you, of course, and I know him working next door has been a bit inconvenient, but I think it could, if you wanted it to, actually turn out to be the opposite.’
Mel folded her arms. ‘Have you said all this to him?’
‘No! I only just thought of it. But he’s a good person to know, if your business is houses.’
Mel nodded quickly. ‘Well, I’ll definitely consider it. And thank you, for being so understanding with the bed.’
‘No problem,’ Thea said. The two of them exchanged a few more pleasantries before Mel said she had to go: she was picking up her middle child from football practice, and her youngest from her singing lesson.
Once Thea was alone again, she felt slightly sick. Would Ben want her interfering like that? Offering his services to other people? Still, it wasn’t as if it was a done deal. Mel might not follow up on it, considering that she was already annoyed about his building work impacting one of her properties. But she had a strong urge to help Ben, to do somethingfor him, in return for all his kindness. If he had a few more opportunities for once he’d finished fixing his own place, then that could only be a good thing, couldn’t it?
