“Daddy, be super nice to Tinley.”

“I’m always nice.” Kyler walked toward the door. Tinley hugged her journal to her chest and followed him. She stopped at the door and turned. She ran back toward me. I squatted down and absorbed her hug. I didn’t want to let her go ever.

But I did.

I sat next to Rayna on the couch and watched the door.

“She’s going to be fine.” Rayna took my hand. “She’s strong.”

“Thank you. For being such a good friend to both of us.” I looked down at her.

“Now do you think I’m good enough for your best friend?” Rayna grinned up at me.

“Yeah, but now he’s not good enough for you.” I kissed her on the side of her head. “I’m hungry. Let’s eat some junk food.”

“Yes, best uncle ever.” Rayna raised her arms in the air in victory.

“Don’t let Chandler and Randall hear you say that.”

She dropped her arms.

“Oh shoot, knowing Randall, he probably has microphones and cameras in this whole place.” Rayna squinted and stared up at the air vent.

“Randall, if you’re listening, you’re my favorite uncle, too.”

I reached behind me and flipped the light switch on and off.

Rayna gasped and clutched her chest.

We both stared at each other before cracking up.

CHAPTER 23

TINLEY

The FBI office sat on a whole city block downtown. We approached the doors and were met by an agent, who escorted us to the elevator and up to the twelfth floor. We stepped out into a small open area, followed by a bank of doors leading to various rooms.

We approached a door at the end of the hall and were told to wait. Agent Stanley walked out a few minutes later.

“Hi, Tinley.” He frowned up at Kyler. “Kyler.”

They shook hands.

“Is he in there?” I asked.

“He is.” Agent Stanley opened a door across the hall. I couldn’t drag my eyes away from the door he’d just exited through.

“What is he saying?” I wanted to know if he knew that what he did was wrong.

“Unfortunately, he has asked for a lawyer, so we can’t talk to him, ask him any questions, yet.” Agent Stanley stepped in front of me. “But there is already an extradition request from Turkeyin the works, which will give us some leverage to find out what we need to know.”

“I understand he technically didn’t commit a crime here in America.” I nodded.

“Maybe.” Agent Stanley rubbed his chin. “If he contacted the people who sent you to him while he was still in the US, we might have some cyber-related charges to put on him.”

“Maybe it would help if he heard what he did to me from my perspective.” I struggled. “I mean, if it will get him to talk.”

“It could.”
