He nodded, still looking grim. “I’m putting protection on you. She is not to see you, speak to you, or even look at you. I don’t think she’s heard about you being here.”

The nurse gave the both of us a suspicious look. She shouldn’t have. Jim was wearing his kutte. That should explain it all.

“Jim,” I whispered. “You can’t, it’ll raise too many questions. Just let me handle it, please. I have a divorce to get through.”

He nodded, breathing heavily with his restraint. The nurse took the measurements quickly and scurried out again, leaving us alone.

“I need to go and punch something,” Jim said, clenching his jaw. I nodded. I could see him unraveling, shaking with anger.

“I’ll send a prospect to sit with you, and then they can bring you to my home when they discharge you,” he growled. I opened my mouth to argue, but he pressed a finger to my lips as he leaned over me again, guessing the words that I was about to utter.

“Fuck the gossip mongers, Daisy. You’re mine. I don’t care who knows, and I’ll knock anyone on their ass who gives us shit.”

“Jim,” I breathed.

“No Daisy, you’re staying home with me tonight, and then I’ll escort you home tomorrow if you’re feeling better.”

“I’ll be fine, the worst is over,” I assured him.

He nodded curtly. “Then I’ll see you at home,” he ordered. I gave in and nodded my agreement. He returned my nod, and slowly walked out of the room, each movement carefully orchestrated to not reveal the violence simmering underneath.

I took a deep breath. I didn’t think I could love him more, but the control he exhibited. Dad would have broken everything he could reach in his temper. Blaze would have yelled and stormed off. Jim prioritized me and my needs, then took himself to aplace where he could let the steam off safely. His self-control was incredible.

“Is everything alright?” the nurse asked as she peeked her head in.

I bit my lip to try and control my tears as I nodded. “Everything’s wonderful,” I told her. “I’m ready to start the discharge process.”

“You sure, honey?” The nurse looked skeptical.

I nodded. “He didn’t start this,” I told her. “He’s just fixing what others broke.”

Her shoulders sagged in relief. “If you’re sure.”

Yeah, I was sure.

Chapter 49: Jim

I slowly and carefully strapped my fists, feeling the anger curl through me. I knew I could hurt myself with the amount of rage I was containing in my body. I definitely could hurt someone else. Several someones. Veryspecificsomeones. Just not the someone in front of me.

Horse held my glove for me to put on. He was our tech guy. He hid his nerdiness well behind the idiot facade, but there wasn’t much that went on in the town that he didn’t know about. Having the queen of gossip as his sister also helped him stay up to date.

“What happened to her?” he asked quietly, pulling the Velcro tight.

“Daisy? Panic attack,” I told him after he nodded.

“I’m guessing it was bad?” he asked, slipping the second glove on.

I nodded. “I had to go and pick her up from the side of the road. By the way, do you know if her car and my bike were picked up?” I explained in a dead voice. I had to keep things locked up, compartmentalised. If I didn’t, then the wrong people would get hurt. Been there, done that.

Horse nodded. “Tinker’s sent some apprentices out with the tow truck.” He tapped my wrist and stepped back. “Do you know what set her off?”

“Molly told her it was her fault that the baby died,” I replied, hitting the gloves together, and stood up.

“Fuck! Her own mother said that shit?”

I turned on him, and growled, “Molly isnother mother. She’s forfeited that role by saying that shit.”
