It didn’t matter that they were fully clothed. Leo was already in her body, mind, and soul. Carrying her, guiding her, leading her. Chasing the bright light of the charge as it crackled inexorably on towards a mountain of gunpowder. Tearing her mouth from his, Ella panted into his neck, her muscles taut, her hips rising to meet his.

Then the charge reached the centre of her, detonating an orgasm so powerful it ripped a scream from her throat. Holding on for dear life, sensation scorched through her, a blast of light that shuddered through with the power of a supernova.

The shockwaves kept coming, amplified by the energy pouring off Leo. He kept pushing the pleasure on until he gave a harsh cry and collapsed on top of her, his face buried in the crook of her neck, his breath heavy and ragged.

Ella floated, her eyes open but unseeing. Every part of her was humming at a new frequency, buzzing in technicolour. There was no past. No future. Only the perfect present.

But then, like the first drops of rain on her parade, thoughts fell from the sky to wash away her happiness.

What just happened? Oh my god, I threw myself at him. I used my best friend like a giant sex toy. I made everything weird. So weird. I’m going to have to leave. Move out. But where?

‘Breathe,’ Leo mumbled into her neck.

Ella did, realising her panicked thoughts had stopped her breath. ‘I’m so sorry,’ she gasped, her chest filled with stabbing anxiety.

He raised his head, his eyes drowsy. ‘What for?’

Her cheeks flamed. ‘Using you.’

Something flickered in his expression. Was it hurt?

‘In what way?’

‘Like a sex toy,’ she mumbled.

There was a pause as his forehead creased. ‘You think I didn’t want what just happened? That I didn’t enjoy it?’

Now Ella felt the flush of embarrassment all the way to the tips of her toes. She nodded.

Leo rolled fully off her and took her hand.

‘What—’ Her sentence cut off when he placed her fingers over the very wet crotch of his jeans. ‘Oh.’

‘That’show much I enjoyed it.’

What now?Never in her wildest dreams did Ella ever imagine being in this situation with Leo. Sure, she’d been in love with him before, but their relationship had always been that of friends. Ever since they’d been little kids. What on earth was going to happen now?

Leo’s gaze was searching. ‘Are you alright?’

I don’t want to lose you. I can’t lose you. Fear crawled like spiders under her skin.He felt sorry for me. His date didn’t pan out, so he’s horny. He didn’t know how to say no to me.

‘Ella?’

Indecision kept every word locked inside, so she nodded.

‘You don’t seem okay.’

Don’t ruin everything!‘I’m f-fine.’

Abruptly, Leo sat up, his legs bent, resting his head in his hands. ‘Fuck!’ he growled. ‘I’m sorry, Ella. I’m so fucking sorry.’

She pushed herself to sit, her hand reaching for his arm, then withdrawing. ‘Don’t apologise. Honestly, there’s nothing to be sorry for!’

He didn’t meet her gaze, just huffed and slowly shook his head.

Tears filled her throat. She’d never before felt so wretched. ‘Leo, I’m the one who should be sorry. I’ve ruined everything. I—’ She broke off as he raised his head, his hair sticking up in all directions, his expression anguished.

‘You haven’t ruined anything.’ His voice sounded tired. ‘You’re my best friend. Nothing you could ever say or do will change that.’
