‘What was that?’
‘My happy dance because you called me “angel”.’
His expression faltered for a second, before his smile returned. ‘And what happens when I call you “minx”?’
She felt heat bloom across her skin.
‘You blush,’ he stated, dropping a kiss onto each cheek.
From his jeans pocket on the floor, his phone buzzed. He didn’t move.
‘Do you need to get that?’ she asked.
He shook his head. ‘Nothing good seems to come from answering it when I’m with you.’
‘It might be important?’
‘Nothing’s more important than you.’
She squealed with excitement inside, but externally tried to hide it.
He raised an eyebrow. ‘Is that meant to be your “stern vicar” face?’
She giggled. ‘Might be.’ Reaching to the floor, she snagged his jeans with her hand as the buzzing stopped.
‘Kicking me out already?’
She took the phone from the back pocket and gave it to him.
He glanced at the screen and sighed. ‘It was Mum. I should call her back.’
‘Jack… Are you going to tell anyone about us?’
She could see the uncertainty in his eyes. ‘Would you rather I didn’t?’
‘It’s not what you might think, really. I just want the beginning of our relationship to be special. And just about us. I don’t want people to gossip.’
‘You’re not going to tell Estelle?’
She shook her head. ‘Not yet. My whole life is public and I want us to have privacy.’
‘You know you’re going to have to start locking your doors? Or, at the very least, teach people to knock before barging in?’
Eveline frowned. Jack was right, but how could she change the status quo without upsetting anyone? And what on earth was she going to say when she next saw Simon?

Jack: I’m home now and wishing I was with you X
Eveline: I wish you were here too. I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy before xxx
Jack: Me neither. Sweet dreams and I’ll see you in the morning XXX
Eveline: Don’t forget I’ve got Matins first thing at the church, then I’m at Foxbrooke Primary for assembly. I should be back by ten fifteen. You’ve got a key for the back door, so come and go as you please xxx
Jack: Are you locking your doors now? X
Eveline: If you’re with me, then they’ll be bolted as well… xxx
