She nuzzled the end of his nose with hers. ‘Jolly good. I do like coming first.’

He took a breath and raised an eyebrow. ‘You haven’t come at all yet…’

‘It doesn’t matter,’ she replied with a grin. ‘I’m ridiculously happy right now.’

‘Only ridiculously?’ He rolled her off him, pinning her to the bed. ‘I think we should at least aim forludicrously. What do you think?’ She smiled, and he kissed her again. ‘Orpreposterouslyhappy?’ He peppered kisses down the soft skin of her neck and she writhed beneath him. ‘Insanelyhappy?’

She sighed. ‘I think I’m all those things and more right now.’

He shifted to the side and ran his fingers down her torso, through her curls, into the wet heat of her pussy.

She arched off the bed into his hand. ‘Jack!’

Brushing his lips across her nipple, he felt it tighten under his touch. ‘Let’s see if we can work through the thesaurus,’ he murmured. ‘We’ll start withridiculouslyhappy, and end when you run out of words and forget your own name…’

Estelle: So sorry I haven’t been around recently. The Winter Ball is taking more of my time than I thought thanks to Jack’s extravagant decorating ideas. And the company investing in the summer festival has been bought out so I’m stressing about who the new owners are and if they still want to do it. Anyhoo, are you free today at all for a catch up? You need to tell me what the fuck’s happening with the pews. Miss you xxxx

Eveline: I miss you too. I’m in Wells seeing the Bishop tomorrow morning, but if you had some time, you could meet me afterwards at the Italian place? I have BIG news… xxx

Estelle: What BIG news? Tell me NOW!

Eveline: Patience is a virtue…

Estelle: You have got to be SHITTING me! I can hardly wait for handmade chocolates and gelato, let alone your gossip. TELL ME NOW!

Eveline: Can you do eleven?

Estelle: You’re not leaving Foxbrooke, are you?!

Eveline: Never. Not going anywhere xxx

Estelle: Thank fuck for that. Okay, I’ll be there from ten thirty. I have to sample every flavour of ice cream before making my decision, and these things can’t be rushed.

Eveline: Fantastic! See you there xxx

Estelle: Can’t wait for your BIG news. Love you XXX

Eveline: Love you too xxx

Eveline stood outside the Bishop’s Palace, watching the morning sunshine reflecting on the surface of the moat. Despite the fact it was officially a city, Wells had a population smaller than that of Foxbrooke. It was ancient and pretty, and Eveline always tried to arrive early for her meetings so she could pray in the cathedral, then say hello to the ducks and swans that glided around the palace moat.

God, thank you for this beautiful day and thank you for Jack. I don’t think I’m ever going to stop thanking you for bringing him into my life. He is a blessing beyond blessings.

Despite the unsettled nature of her upbringing and feeling that she didn’t really belong anywhere, since finding her calling, Eveline had found her place in the world. But now she was together with Jack, she felt a different kind of contentment, one bursting with excitement for the future.

Her gaze moved from the sparkling water to a woman with a tiny baby strapped to her chest. Eveline’s hand instinctively moved over her stomach. Had she missed the window for having her own child? Would Jack ever change his mind about being a father?

Even though they hadn’t yet discussed marriage, Eveline knew that was a certainty. She wouldn’t have slept with him unless she was sure he was the one. But as for children?

I trust you, God. I know you will find the right path for me.

Checking the time, she walked across the moat into the grounds of the palace and through to the offices of Jonathan Palmer, the Bishop of Bath and Wells.

He opened the door and welcomed her into the ancient room. The solid stone walls had been built over eight-hundred years ago, and the room always had a peacefulness about it that she loved.

‘Take a seat, Eveline, and I’ll make us a cup of tea.’
