‘The castle.’

His forehead furrowed. ‘Why?’

She crossed her arms across her stomach. ‘Don’t act all innocent. You know why.’

‘I do?’

‘Fuck’s sake, Jamie. Kirsten. She wants you. You clearly want her, so—’

Jamie shook his head, pushed the door open and entered the kitchen. He put his guitar on the table and took off his boots.

‘Do you want something to drink?’ he asked. ‘Glass of water or anything?’

‘Don’t ignore me. I’m trying to be nice. If you fancy her, then go for it.’

He looked at her and her heart skipped a beat. ‘I’m not interested in Kirsten.’

Emotion boiled inside her.Do not cry. Do not fucking cry!

‘Of course you are,’ she huffed. ‘She’s beautiful, talented, famous and rich. Even Fiona said you liked her.’

‘Fi saidwhat?’

‘You like each other.’

He shook his head. ‘She’s pissed and full of shit.’

He poured out two glasses of water, put one on the table next to her, drank his, then refilled the glass.

‘I’m going to bed,’ he said.

He left the room and she followed him up the stairs.

‘Jamie!’ she hissed. ‘Don’t ignore me.’

He stopped outside his room. They could hear Morag snoring loudly down the corridor.

‘I’m not ignoring you. I heard you, but you’re not listening to me. I don’t want Kirsten.’ He sighed and ran his hand into his hair. ‘I want—’

‘What? What do you want?’

‘I want to go to bed.’ He pushed open the door, put his glass of water on his bedside table and flicked on the side light.

Sam followed him, closing the door and slamming her glass on his desk. Drops spilled out.

Jamie sat on the edge of his bed, his hands clenched by his sides, his head bent.

‘Why don’t you want Kirsten?’ she demanded.

Silence.

‘She’s not you,’ he exhaled.

‘What’s that got to do with anything?’

His dark eyes met hers and she froze. He looked desperate.

‘Sam, I want you.’
