He must have taken her response as a ‘yes’ and he moved closer.

‘Ready?’

She nodded. She had no idea what he was about to do, but right now she would say yes to anything.

He reached down and grabbed her, balling his hands in the bottom of her skirt and the back of her top. Before she knew it, she was lying horizontally across the back of his shoulders and he was standing. She screamed with nervous laughter as Morag whooped in the background. Jamie took a breath and she tensed.

Before she could blink, he shoulder pressed her above his head. By now she was hysterical and convinced she’d just climaxed.

Then she was falling. He caught her in his arms and she reflexively held around the back of his neck. They stared at each other, breathing hard.

‘Oh my giddy aunt! Jamie, ma wee boy, that was amazing!’

He started as if woken from a dream and let her gently to the ground.

‘I’ve even got it videoed on my phone. Come and see.’

Jamie shook his head and went back inside the house, returning with a gym bag and his car keys. ‘I’ll see you later.’

‘But son, what about dinner? You don’t have to leave yet.’

‘I’ll eat later, don’t worry about me.’

He walked off hurriedly and Sam watched him go.

By the time Jamie returned from gymnastics, Sam was reading one of Fiona’s romance novels in bed with the accompanying noise of Morag’s snoring rumbling down the corridor. She’d deliberately chosen a story with a blond alpha billionaire in an attempt to draw at least some of her cognitive function away from Jamie. But despite how much she tried to get into it, she was irritated by the male lead’s high-handed arrogance and what a doormat the female main character was.

She put the book down as she heard Jamie in the shower. Her mouth ran dry as she imagined the water sluicing over the muscles she’d felt earlier. He was the quietest, yet most powerful man she’d ever met. And despite his shyness, the way he’d stared at her, the way he’d said the word ‘strong’, she was in absolutely no doubt should Jamie choose to unleash his passion, he had the ability to be her complete undoing.

She remembered the way Rory had looked at Zoe and shivered. She’d seen the same intensity in Jamie’s eyes. It was just a shame that intensity had been motivated by annoyance, not lust. She turned off the light and let her hands trace over her pyjama top. She knew he thought she was crazy, but he definitely didn’t think she was cute. Her fingernails dragged over the fabric, pulling it across the tips of her nipples. Her soft sigh filled the darkness as pleasure rippled through her and she let herself drift into fantasy.

It was still darkwhen she woke. She checked her phone. After over a week of writing songs almost non-stop with Jamie, the day of the concert was finally here. Nausea rolled in her stomach. What had she done? She’d turned their lives upside down and for what? An insane notion that the world’s most famous movie star would notice her, fall in love and whisk her away to LA? Sleep was now an impossibility as everything inside her was scratchy and irritated. She flung off the covers and tiptoed out of the room. She needed a cup of tea to calm her down.

Descending the stairs, she could see a faint light coming from the kitchen. Jamie was sitting shirtless at the table, his head in his hands. He glanced up as she entered and his eyes widened.

‘Um.’ He looked panicked. ‘I’m wearing boxer shorts.’

Sam sat opposite him. ‘I didn’t think you were naked.’

He stood. ‘I should go.’

‘Ugh, just sit down. I don’t care that you’re only in your underpants. I’ve only got one more item of clothing on than you and you’re not bothered.’

He swallowed. ‘Do you want a cup of something? Kettle’s just boiled.’

‘Sit, I’ll get it.’

She made herself a cup of tea and sat opposite him. ‘Can’t sleep?’

He shook his head.

‘Me neither. I get so nervous before a live performance.’

His jaw was tense. A pulse beat fast in his neck and she could feel vibrations through the table as his leg bounced up and down. He swallowed, his eyes shifting around as if looking for something.

‘I’m so nervous I think I might have a panic attack,’ he said quietly.
