‘You’re small but you’re mighty.’

She grinned at him. ‘Says the man who’s holding me up.’ He gently pulled out of her and put her to the ground, then went to take the condom off.

‘Jesus, Jamie!’

His forearms were streaked with blood. They looked at the wall where lines of livid red brushed against the rough whitewash.

‘Oh.’ He laughed. ‘My first ever sex injury.’

Sam found a roll of blue paper towels and pulled sheets off, gently patting them against his arm. ‘You okay?’

He smiled. He’d never been better. ‘Yeah, I’m grand.’

She looked at his neck and her forehead creased.

‘What is it?’ he asked.

She blushed. ‘Erm, I might have, er, bitten you.’

The heat rushed into his cheeks. ‘Oh.’

‘I’m sure it will be fine once your shirt is back on.’

It tookten minutes for Sam to straighten him out. His hair was defying gravity, he’d lost two buttons from his shirt and his arms had to be bandaged with paper towels to stop them seeping through and staining the fabric. His collar only just hid Sam’s bite and he was glad when they were on stage later he would be hiding at the back.

They strolled back slowly through the dark corridors, their hands intertwined. She let go outside the main door to the great hall and part of his heart fell away.

It’s not over yet.

He pushed open the door for her and they entered a world of light and heat and noise. Zoe rushed over and grabbed Sam, and he let her go, walking to the band who were having a break. Donnie, a fiddle player a couple of years younger than him, waved him over.

‘I’ve got you a beer.’

Jamie took it. ‘Cheers.’

‘I didn’t get a chance to speak to you earlier,’ Donnie said. ‘But have you thought about how you’re going to get your music out?’

‘Out?’

‘You know, out into the world. Get yourself a deal.’

‘A record deal?’

‘Yeah, what else? A buy one, get one free deal from Iceland?’

‘I hadn’t thought about it.’

Donnie shook his head. ‘Well, you should. You need to speak to Campbell King. He’s the big man at Ness Records. He’s sound. Really decent bloke. You must have heard of him?’

He shook his head. ‘You know me, I don’t get out much.’

‘Well that’s about to change now Brad Bauer’s all over you like a rash.’

Jamie looked out into the crowds. Brad was talking to Sam and Zoe. He gesticulated wildly, then pulled them both in for a hug. Rory was standing to one side, a muscle twitching in his jaw.

I know how you feel, mate.

‘Don’t you think?’
