‘So you’ll stay living with your mum all your life?’

‘She needs me.’

Duncan rolled his eyes. ‘Whatever, Jamie. Look. If it went well with Sam, then what are you doing here?’

Jamie shrugged.

‘Fuck your insecurities. What do you think’s been going through Sam’s mind today? How do you think she felt waking up to find you’d gone?’

‘Why would she care? I bet she does this all the time.’

Duncan shoved him in the chest. ‘Don’t be a prick. Don’t put your shit on her.’

‘Fuck off.’

‘No, you fuck off. You’re being an arsehole. Sam’s awesome. She wouldn’t jump into bed with someone she didn’t care about.’

‘Brad Bauer?’

‘Don’t be such a dick. She would never have shagged him. He’s just an excuse to try and make more of her life. She’s clever and funny, cool and pretty. Do you think she really wants to spend her life playing a tart onElm Tree Lane?’

‘If you like her so much, then why don’t you sleep with her?’

The sudden silence slapped him in the face.

Duncan turned on his heel and stalked off, shaking his head.

‘Dunc—’

‘Get to fuck, Jamie.’

Jamie bent forward, his hands resting on his thighs as if he’d been punched in the stomach. He’d been so caught up in his own feelings it never crossed his mind Sam might be having any of her own. Duncan was right. He’d been a total fucking dick. He jogged after him.

‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it.’

His friend changed from a stride to a jog, his feet crunching on the loose stone, sending shale tumbling down the path.

‘Dunc, wait up.’

He ignored him.

‘Dunc, please. I don’t know what to do!’

Duncan stopped and faced him, breathing hard. ‘No shit, Sherlock.’

‘I’m sorry. I don’t know what to say, how to act with her, anything.’

‘Mate, just be yourself.’

Jamie shook his head. That would never be enough.

‘Can I come back to yours for a bit?’ he asked.

‘You’d rather face the Fiona inquisition than see Sam right now?’

Jamie hesitated, then nodded.

Duncan shrugged his shoulders. ‘Your funeral. Don’t say you haven’t been warned.’
