Her heart leapt off the blocks at a hundred miles an hour.

‘W-what?’ she stammered. ‘What do you mean? In what way do you want me?’

‘In every way,’ he replied.

Blood roared and crashed in Sam's ears, a pounding surf of white noise. She struggled to explain his words away, to find an explanation that fitted her narrative. But the way he stared at her stopped every thought in its tracks. He looked at her the way Rory looked at Zoe. As if she held his life and his happiness in her hands.

Sam, I want you.

With those four words, he’d opened himself up. He’d laid out his heart and it was up to her to take it.

She closed the distance between them as he stood. His pupils had turned the irises to night. They pulled her in, drawing her to him. Every nerve was trembling with anticipation. She reached her hands to his and he took them. He leaned down and her eyes fluttered closed.

Cool air ghosted between her lips, then warmth as his brushed softly against hers. They traced her skin with sparkles of light that spun in circles, lifting her higher each time his skin touched hers. She squeezed his fingers, anchoring herself before she floated away.

Every kiss was a caress. Each slow pass of his lips made her hungry for more. Desire shivered through her, drawn to the heavy heat between her legs. She pressed herself against him, feeling his breath catch. He released a hand from hers and threaded it into her hair, groaning against her open mouth. She sucked his bottom lip between hers and he jerked as if shot, pulling away, his forehead on hers.

‘Jesus, Sam. Fuck, I…’

Happiness bubbled inside her. This strong, silent man was falling apart with a kiss. She scored a fingernail up the crease of his spine. With every inch, his breath quickened, his grip tightening on her. She grabbed his hair.

‘Kiss me, Jamie.’

He cradled her head, kneading her scalp as his lips grazed tantalisingly across hers. She was filled with honey and caramel. Drugged with pleasure. The tip of his tongue traced each lip, and she clutched his T-shirt, needing him closer, needing him inside her. She opened wider, pressing her lips against his, gasping as his tongue swept into her mouth.

Electricity arced through her, sharp prickles of pleasure overriding all thoughts except those crying outmore. His kisses were hot and urgent, his tongue stroking against hers as if emboldened each time she pulled him closer. She tugged his top from his trousers, greedily stroking the hard expanse of his back, feeling the movement of his ribs as he dragged air in and out. He felt so good. Everything felt so good. She broke the kiss, pushing him back so she could pull his T-shirt up. He didn’t move to help. He just stared at her as if woken confused from a dream.

‘Take it off, Jamie.’

His breathing was ragged, his cheeks flushed. He paused as if uncertain what to do, then ripped it off and threw it to the floor.

Sam stared.

He was incredible. So big and solid. His muscles rippled under the skin as he breathed. Dark hair graced the centre of his chest and ran from his navel into his jeans.

She swallowed. Despite her denial, she’d thirsted after him for months and now she was going to drink him in. She zeroed in on the huge bulge in his jeans and wet her lips. Her fingers darted to the waistband, but his hands covered hers.

‘Sam.’

‘What?’ Her breathing was frantic, a desperate drawing in of oxygen to fuel the fire raging inside her.

‘I… Can we go slow?’

What?‘Why?’ She wanted him now. She felt like she’d waited half a lifetime for this moment, but the intensity in his gaze made her pause.

‘I want this to be good for you.’

She huffed out a laugh. ‘You have got to be kidding me, Jamie McDougall. Thisisgood. It’s the best good I’ve ever had. Now take off your clothes before you drive me insane.’

His eyes flickered, then he shook his head. ‘No.’

‘What?!’

Morag’s rumbling snore from the other room suddenly stopped. The silence was deafening. They froze.

Morag started up again and they released a collective breath. Sam wanted to laugh but when Jamie’s eyes returned to hers, all she saw was blistering heat. She surreptitiously tried to free the top button of his trousers.
