She licked her lips. ‘I’m also, er, a bit scared of what’s in there.’ Now both his eyebrows were raised. ‘You know. The monster…’
His face contorted as he suppressed a smile, then he gave up trying and laughed. ‘This isn’t Loch Ness.’
She frowned at him but the corners of her mouth kept twitching up.
He took her hands. ‘The biggest things in there tonight will be us. How about I go in front and you follow behind?’
She nodded and squared her shoulders. ‘Okay, I can do this.’
She walked away from him, further up the slope towards a line of trees, then glanced back. He was facing the loch. She watched him toe off his boots and pull off his socks. Her mouth ran dry. All the moisture in her body rushed south. He popped the top button of his jeans, then paused.
‘Are you taking off any clothes or are you just watching me take off mine?’ he asked casually.
She spun on her heels and tugged off her jacket, her face burning. ‘I’m taking them off,’ she replied. ‘Don’t look.’ She heard him laughing softly and quickly pulled off her clothes. The cold air shocked her body, sending goosebumps rippling over her skin and pebbling her nipples.
What in god’s name was she doing?
‘Okay,’ she called out. ‘I’m going to turn around now. You need to look at the ground.’
‘Roger that.’
She stepped gingerly over the cold stones down the slope to the water. They felt like lumps of ice. She stopped when she saw his bare legs in front of her.
‘You ready?’ he asked.
‘Yes. But go slowly.’
He stepped into the black water without a sound.
She inched forwards.
‘¡Mierda! It’s so cold!’
‘You’re doing great,’ he reassured her as he continued deeper.
‘Wait! Charlie, stop.’ She balled her hands into fists, breathing in and out through clenched teeth as she shuffled forwards.Come on!She took a bigger step, stumbled over a rock and pitched forwards with a cry. Her arms flailed. She was too far away to reach his back, so she caught him around his hips, planting her face firmly into one taut ass cheek which stifled her scream.Oh fuck. She felt the tremors in his body as he laughed. Part of her died while the other parts had never felt so alive.
‘You alright back there?’
She’d started to shiver but her face was on fire. She walked her feet closer and stood, reluctantly removing her hands from him.
‘I apologise,’ she said stiffly, staring at his peachy backside. ‘For attempting to eat your bottom.’
He flexed one butt cheek, then the other and she drew in a sharp breath.
‘You checking out the Hamilton buns of steel?’ he asked, still laughing.
Valentina groaned. ‘I don’t think I’ve ever been so embarrassed. When I tell Isabella, she’s going to laugh so hard she’ll probably pop her baby out.’
He reached his hand behind him and she took it. ‘Hey, don’t be embarrassed. I can’t remember the last time I’ve laughed so much. You’re a comedy genius.’
‘Humph.’
‘Come on, let’s get a little deeper before I turn completely into Charlotte.’ He continued slowly forward and she followed, wincing and hyperventilating with every step. ‘Try to slow your breathing. Breathe in and out through your nose.’
‘I’m smaller than you, so it’s deeper for me,’ she replied through chattering teeth. ‘How can you be so calm?’ She gripped his hand tightly. ‘And I’m scared.’
Charlie stopped. ‘Okay, how about I carry you?’
