‘I did warn you, I’m a Jedi Juvenile Master.’ He smiled. ‘I was wondering if you wanted to do anything before your posh dinner tonight.’
‘Are you going to be there?’
He shook his head. She looked disappointed.
‘But I thought when it was over, you might want to cross something off your list?’ he asked. Her eyes widened till he could see all of the white around the dark irises. ‘No, not that, I thought you might like to go skinny-dipping. It’ll be dark,’ he added, as if that would sell it.
‘Naked?’ she whispered, her voice going higher.
He nodded slowly. She shook her head so fast he could hear the beads on her dress clinking together.
He put his hand on his heart. ‘I promise I’ll keep my eyes closed. And I will get naked first.’
She took a breath, then started coughing. Had she just choked on her own saliva?
‘You okay?’
She nodded.
‘And anyway, once I get in the water, the cold turns me into Charlotte. Remember?’
She shook her head slowly. ‘Charlie. You are intolerable.’
He grinned widely. She smiled back and every feeling inside him ramped up.
‘I was wondering,’ she began. ‘If you could take me—’
‘Yes,’ he interrupted. ‘Whatever you want, the answer’s yes.’
She raised her eyebrows. ‘Really?’
‘Yes.’
‘Anything?’
He nodded.
‘Go to a karaoke bar with Brad?’
He nodded again more hesitantly.
‘Sing “2 Become 1” by the Spice Girls with him?’
His smile was slipping but he nodded again, trying to remember if anywhere within a fifty-mile radius of Kinloch had a karaoke bar.
‘Share a spa day, including hot tub and couples massage, with …’
This was more like it.
‘...Vlad?’
He retched and looked at her in horror as she laughed.
‘Have I found your hard limit?’ she asked, her eyes alight with mischief.
He nodded. ‘And it’s also been banned by the Geneva Conventions.’ He shuddered and shook his head. ‘You’ve scarred me for life. There are some things, once thunk, can never be unthunk.’
She giggled. ‘I was actually wondering if you could take me for a run in the countryside. I need some exercise.’
