Colton’s laugh echoes throughout the empty space of the lodge. “Yeah? How’s she going to feel about that?”
I hear the front door open and snap closed. After taking a few quick steps to the door, I peer out just in time to see Lexi scurrying to the kitchen. Turning back to Colt, I chuckle. “She’ll think she’s going to hate it, but I can be very persuasive.”
He laughs again as I follow Lexi’s path.
Tiptoeing to the kitchen, I find her putting away groceries and starting dinner. I stay out of sight to observe her for a few minutes. She’s so fucking beautiful it makes my chest ache. How she could ever feel unworthy of love is beyond me.
She’s tied her light blonde hair in a high ponytail that sways with her movements. I fucking love her hair like that. It shows off her long neck, and I have to bite back a groan. I’ve learned the pulse point on her neck is a weakness of hers.
“Are you seriously just going to stand there creeping?” Lexi calls out.
Shit. I hadn’t realized she caught me yet.
Smiling, I enter the kitchen and join her at the counter. “Not creeping, Locket. Just admiring,” I whisper into her neck, then watch as her pulse picks up.
Lexi’s movements halt but only momentarily. She may withhold her mind, but her body can’t hide from me. Finally, she throws an almost gentle elbow into my stomach and moves to the island.
After washing my hands, I join her. “Where were you today?”
“I had an appointment,” she says without looking up from her cutting board.
“What kind of appointment?”
“What are you, the schedule police now?”
“No, I just missed you. I’m making small talk.”
“Well, talk about something else.”
This week, she has disappeared for a couple of hours every day but never tells me where she’s going. “What’s the big secret? Meeting up with Toots?”
This causes her to slam down her knife, but I can tell she’s trying not to laugh.
“Toots? You mean Garrett? Who told you?”
“What do you mean? That Garrett Toots was your high school sweetheart?” I tease.
“His name is Garrett Wiley. He was not my sweetheart, but he was sweet, so you better not be giving him a hard time.”
“Who me?” I scoff. “Come on, sweetheart, give me a little credit. He may have had you first, but I get you last.”
I fucking love that Lexi’s chest heaves after my admission. I can see her working to steady her breathing, but I want to push her just a little more.
Walking behind her, I crowd her body until she’s pressed up against the granite.
“Will you let me have you tonight, Locket?” I growl beside her ear, then place both hands on either side of her.
“I …” I hear her swallow. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“Oh, it’s a very good idea. Trust me,” I plead as I push my pelvis into her back.
“Easton? Wh-What do you want from me?” The sadness in her voice guts me, and I spin her around to face me.
“Just you. That’s all I want, Lexi. You and me as a team.”
“I honestly don’t know if I can give that to you,” she whispers.
Raising her face to meet mine, I stare into her blue irises that pool with unshed tears. Nothing has ever hurt more than seeing the pain in her beautiful eyes.
