“They always do when the home team wins. Are we winning today, Lexi?”
“I never lose.”
A happiness I didn’t know existed fills my chest.
Placing my forehead on hers, I whisper, “Stubborn to the end.”
“You wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“No, I wouldn’t.” Sliding my hands into her hair, I pull her in for a kiss. “I love you now and forever.”
“I know.” She smirks.
Clasping her hand, I turn to the crowd. “She said yes to forever.”
The applause is smaller this time, and glancing around, I see why. Colton and Halt are nose to nose in a heated but quiet argument.
“What do you think that’s about?” I whisper so only Lexi can hear.
She stares at me like I have two heads, then rolls her eyes—my prickly princess.
“Two words,” she finally says. “Rylan Maroney.”
My head jostles back and forth between Lexi and my brothers. When Halton storms off, I can’t help but wonder what kind of shitshow we’re in for now.
Epilogue
Six months later
“I’m pretty sure the girl is supposed to plan the wedding,” Dillon says, entering the lodge.
We’ve come a long way in six months. It was rocky at first, but I have to admit, it’s nice to have my friend back. He’s a brother by choice, and once I got past my hurt, I was humbled by the sacrifices he made.
“Lexi isn’t your typical girl. If I don’t do it this way, it’ll never happen.”
“All right, man. You know her best.” Colton laughs.
“Yeah, but she loved me first,” Mason says, entering the room.
“Listen, asshole. You can have my job, but you’ll never get my girl.”
“He’s kicking ass in your old job, actually. Makes me wonder what the hell you even used to do.”
Fucking Preston with the jabs, but he isn’t wrong. Mason was born to run Westbrook Development. My dad would have been proud.
“Anyone heard from Ash today?” I ask. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about him not showing up. It’s become his MO as of late.
“He’ll be here,” Loki assures.
Dillon takes a seat next to me on the bench. “He was in the office when I left, but he had his suit on.”
Dillon has gone to work for Envision. Ashton hired him to help look for Pacen, but Loki told me he’s been invaluable in keeping tabs on Macomb and Fontaine. Fontaine, as expected, skipped town during Summerfest, but nothing gets past Ash. When he’s ready to bring him in, he’ll know exactly where to find him.
Thinking about Pacen makes my heart hurt. It’s been over six months with no leads. It’s as if she just vanished, and I can’t tell who’s more upset, Ashton or Dill.
“She’s coming,” Julia screams from the back hall.
Jesus, that woman is her own brand of crazy.
