“I’m goin’ into town. I’ve got to see about a girl that keeps comin’ up in my cards.”
Easton and I both freeze.Who the hell is she matchmaking with now? When she sees our expressions, she cackles only the way she can. “Now don’t ya go worryin’, Grumpy. Your match was set years ago. You two will make it when you pull yourselves out of the muck.”
“GG,” I scold.
“Don’t go GG’ing me, Locket. When you learn to unlock that heart of yours, a lifetime of happiness will fall at your feet.”
I gasp at her proclamation. How dare she? Also, what the fuck? Sneaking a glance in Easton’s direction, I see his smirk on full display.
“That’s really good to know, GG. It goes well with what I came up here to tell Locket.” Easton grins like a kid in a candy store.
“Mm-hmm. Okay, then. I’ll see ya’s later.”
I stare at the path she takes out of the kitchen long after she’s left.
“So,” Easton breaks the silence, and my spine stiffens, “I’ve decided something.”
“Again?” I can still hear his voice saying he liked being married since the last time he ‘decided’ something.
“Yup. And I know I said I’ll never take anything from you, Locket. I still stand by that, but I’m thinking I’ll have to be creative to get my way.”
Run! Run! Run!Alarm bells sound in my head, making me dizzy.
“Ah, I’m not sure how I feel about this.”
“I know you don’t. But it’s happening. I’ve decided I want to date my wife.”
I’m mid-sip when he throws that curveball at me, and I snort. Coffee flies painfully out of each nostril.
“What the hell, East? We’re not dating. I’m not staying your wife.”
Clinking his coffee cup with mine, he takes a sip. “First date. Coffee. I can’t wait to tell everyone you blew coffee out of your nose on our first date. That will be an epic first-date story.”
“Are you high?”
“High on you, sweetheart.”
My phone rings, and I scamper to get it. Anything to put distance between this infuriating man and me is a good thing. Checking the screen, I see John Baker come up on the caller ID.
“It’s John,” I tell Easton as I answer the call and put it on speaker.
“Hi, John.”
“Lexi-girl. How are you, sweetie?”
“I’m good. I hope you had a good vacation.” Easton rolls his eyes, and then twirls his finger, indicating he wants me to get to the point.Jackass. He really doesn’t know how anything works around here.
“Oh, girrrl! Mexico was on fire. We had the best time, but now that I’m back, work has piled up. That needy, little troll of a man, Fontaine, is all over my ass, so I was wondering if you and your hunka man could meet me today at Eggy’s.”
“He’s not my—”
“How’s one? Does that work for you both?”
“Ah.” Easton nods his head wildly. “Yeah, I guess that’s fine. We’ll see you at one.”
“Sounds good, baby girl. See ya then.”
“Bye, John.”
