I sneak a glance at Emory and see he is mistaking her anger for hunger. Why are you teasing this poor woman? She is going to be in charge of keeping you alive at some point, dickhead. You really should cut her some slack.
I should, but staring at her gorgeous face, I know I won’t. In a couple of months, I know we’ll be relegated to a doctor-patient relationship. We might as well have some fun while we can.
“Come on, sweetheart. Can’t have you starving over there,” I say with a wicked grin.
“You are going to pay for this, Mr. Westbrook. I can eat my weight in meat,” she grumbles.
“I would pay good money to see you eat my meat, Dr. Camden.” I know I’ve just moved the conversation to the R-rated variety with my tone, but I’d do it again to witness the reaction it causes in sweet little Emory.
“Oh my God,” she gasps.
“I think you are going to make my remaining time on Earth a lot of fun, Dr. Camden. Hard, but a lot of fun.” I can’t help but slide a little more innuendo into the conversation.
She flushes in such a unique shade; I know it’s now my new favorite color.
Chapter 1
Preston
Present Day
“Mr. Westbrook, do you have a minute?” I hear Seth ask, and I cringe. Turning, I see him flanked by one of my friends, Trevor, and his fiancé, Julia.Freaking Spy Guy Seth. I realize he helped bring Julia home and is Loki’s right-hand man, but Jesus, he’s a real pain in the ass sometimes.
Laughing, I finally catch Trevor’s eye and get a sinking feeling.Fuck. “This looks ominous, and considering the shit that just went down, I’m guessing it doesn’t bode well for me?”
Julia hasn’t been home for an hour, and I can already sense trouble. Trevor’s father abducted her.Now there is a sentence you don’t get to say every day. Turning back to Seth, I wait for him to continue.
“I need you to come with me. We heard from Loki, and he needs us to secure your penthouse.” Even Seth, who’s a real-life special agent, looks nervous.
“Guys, seriously. What the hell is going on? Let’s just do a quick rundown of the last forty-eight hours, shall we?” My patience and stamina are quickly fading. “My best friends, Dexter, Trevor, Loki, and I, were all targeted by the mob. A mob that Loki’s father ran and Trevor’s father worked for. A goddamn real-life mob that killed Trevor’s mother. The reason Loki has been rogue for over ten years with a secret government agency trying to take them down. Loki, who has been playing a merry fucking fairy in all our lives for years and who is now God knows where, wants me to go home and secure my penthouse?”
I see Trevor grimace, but it’s Seth who speaks first. “Yeah, that’s about it.”
“Jesus,” I say, giving in. Mostly because I am overdue for my medication, and if I don’t get out of here soon, I may have an episode that will spill all my secrets. “Fine, let’s go, Spy Guy. Can you at least tell me what the hurry is?” I swear I see Trevor and Julia exchange a look, but I don’t speak their language of love.
“Ah, well, it appears you’ll be having a houseguest,” Seth informs me, tripping over his words.
I shoot Trevor a glare, but he refuses to make eye contact, and Julia is literally pinching her lips closed with her fingers.
Throwing my hands in the air, I give up. “Alright, Spy Guy. Sounds like we will spend a bit of time together. You might as well call me Preston.
“Doll,” I say to Julia, knowing it’ll get her worked up, “I don’t know what you have up that pretty little sleeve of yours, but nothing can be as bad as Lanie’s psycho cousin, so I’ll survive.” I shoot her a wink and am shocked as hell when she hugs me but says nothing about the ‘doll’ comment.
“Losing your touch there, doll? I thought for sure you’d threaten my balls again.” I choke on my words when I see her face. “Hey, are you okay?” I ask, bringing her in for another hug.
God, sometimes I can be such a prick. This girl has been through so much in the last few days. What am I doing teasing her like this?
“Sorry, Jules. I should have been more sensitive. You’ve had a rough week.”
“No, it’s fine. I’ll threaten your balls the next time I see you if they’re still attached.” Her eyes go shockingly wide, and Trevor pinballs between the two of us before whisking her away with a promise to call me later.
“That was fucking weird, even for Julia,” I tell Seth, but he just ushers me out the door to a waiting car.
Sliding into the back, I’m thankful when he climbs into the passenger seat. I’m not sure how much more small talk I can take. My body is fighting me, and I know I don’t have much time.
“Hey, Seth? How long until this houseguest arrives?”
“We don’t have a definitive time yet, sir. Loki said to expect at least four hours. That gives us just enough time to do the necessary checks.”
