“But of course.” She waves for me to follow her into the kitchen.

On the table, a plate with a cheese crepe is waiting for me. This woman knows me better than I thought. “Thank you so much!”

I only mean to have a few bites, but it’s so good I devour the crepe entirely. She sets a brown bag beside me and says, “For Sebastian. Please let him know we’re thinking about him and wish him well.”

“I will. Thanks again.” I stand and kiss both her cheeks.

With the bag in one hand, I text Xavier that I need to go to the hospital. At the door, I snatch my purse from the entry table and wait for him.

He appears moments later.

“I need to see him,” I say.

He nods and grins with understanding. “I’ll get the car.”

He pulls up to the front door where I’m waiting outside, and we drive to the hospital.

“Have you heard from him since we left?” I ask.

“He texted.”

“About?” I wring my fingers together to help ease my nerves.

“The next step is to get you two to the US.”

“The US?” The thought stirs more anxiety in me. “What for?”

“To see Nathan and Riley.”

“Okay.” He’s making plans without me. Not a good sign. Sebastian could easily be a ghost if he wanted. The man could disappear, and I’d never see him again. “When?”

“Two weeks.”

“Two weeks?” I shout and calm myself. “Is he allowed to travel so soon?”

“No. But you know Sebastian. He does what he wants when he wants.”

I dig deep for courage to ask my next question. “Am…was I invited?”

“Yes.”

I sigh and my muscles unwind a tiny bit. “That’s good.”

“I wouldn’t let him leave without you.”

Now I’m wondering if Xavier invited me and not Sebastian. This is maddening. I have the urge to vomit, but I don’t want to make Xavier pull over, so I swallow until the churning in my stomach eases.

“Are you okay?” Xavier asks.

“Fine.” Is all I can get out.

“He’ll remember. He just needs time. Seeing friends from his past will help.”

“Did you talk to them?”

“I’m waiting to hear back from Nathan.”

Oh God. What if he’s still with Harper? Sebastian always checked on him and Riley to make sure they weren’t interrogated by his family or, worse, hurt by them. Nathan was fine. Riley had disappeared. We never talked about Harper, because I never asked.
