“But you’re still weak.”
“I need time to gain my strength. Other than that, I’m peachy.” He chuckled and moved his arm a little. “Make that golden. Thank you for that. You did it, Lily. The pain is gone. My skin is healed. You’re my angel.”
“How can you say that when we’re still here? We should try to escape.”
“You’re not here. And as soon as I’m able, I will escape.”
“Briella’s coming for you tomorrow. She promised she’d bring you back.”
He shook his head and sighed. “I wouldn’t bet on it.”
“Why?” I blinked slowly and tried to sit up.
“She’ll never come back here.”
I pushed up on shaky arms and looked into his eyes.
“What are you doing? You need to rest,” he complained.
“No. We have to go. Now.”
He pulled me to him.
Too weak to resist, I collapsed against his chest.
“You’re not here, Lily. It’s a dream.”
“Why do you keep saying that?” I turned my head to look up at him. Nutmeg and oak tickled my nose. I inhaled deeply. So good.
“Because I can’t see you. I can only hear and feel you.”
“I have to be here. I need to save you,” I cried before remembering he couldn’t lie. If he couldn’t see me, how was he touching me? Was he listening to my voice? His gaze was on my face, but he didn’t look directly into my eyes.
“Shh.” He began stroking my hair again. “You saved me. In so many ways. I love you, Lily. You have to know that.”
“You shouldn’t have come back to this realm for me,” I said out of frustration and fear. “When I saw you burned and—” I stifled a sob. I never wanted to see him like that again.
“I’ll always come for you.”
My heart warmed, and I decided no matter where I was—a damp dungeon or an enchanting manor—as long as I was in Caiden’s arms, I was in heaven. Listening to his heart beat in rhythm with mine, I smiled. This was home.
“Caiden?” I scooted higher, wanting to be near his lips.
As if he sensed what I was doing, he lowered his head. “Yes.” His sweet breath fanned down on me.
“I want to do something,” I said.
He smirked. “It’s really bad timing.”
“No.” I laughed, despite trying to be serious. “Look here.” I put his hands to my face, near my eyes.
He moved his gaze and although his eyes weren’t fixed on mine, they were close enough. “Caiden, prince of the sentries…” I began the Vow of Keeps.
He drew in a sharp breath. “I wish I could see you.”
“Do you want me to wait?” I asked, even though my heart pounded with excitement. Waiting was the last thing I wanted to do.
“No. Please continue.” A slight smile curved his lips and somehow, his gaze aligned with mine.
