“Mein particular?”
“All your kind.”
“And yours,” he pointed out. “But I promise, I’m not doing anything. How am I to know your response to me if I’m soothing you with my powers?”
“So you’re testing me?” Slightly dizzy, I let my head fall back against the headboard.
“It’s more like I’m learning about you.” He reached over my body and placed his other hand over mine. What felt like a dozen tiny kisses spread up my arms.
I was about to ask, “What is that?” when he whispered, “What are you afraid of, Lily?”
Losing myself completely to him, only to end up brokenhearted—another name to his long list of supernatural girls. I avoided guys like him for a reason.
When I didn’t answer, he said, “Are you afraid to kiss me?”
“No,” I breathed.
“Then do it.”
“First, tell me why?” I struggled to speak. “When I left the manor you seemed done with me. Now you’re here and wanting a kiss again. Is it because of what Alliston said about us being foretold?” The tiny kisses pulsing up my arms moved down my body. I might have moaned. It was hard to tell when I was breathing so loudly.
Caiden smiled. “Tell me what you’re feeling.”
“Answer my question first.”
He leaned away, removing his hands from mine. “You’re not ready to hear everything yet. And I should go. But first, I need to do something. Lie down.”
“Why?”
When he started to climb over me, I slid onto my back. On all fours, he stopped and lowered himself close to my body but didn’t touch me.
My heart thundered and my eyes widened. I fisted the sheets to keep from doing anything stupid—like grab him.
“I won’t hurt you,” was all he said before touching his nose to my neck and inhaling. “Mmm. I’ve always loved your scent. The woods. The beach.”
“It’s my coconut lotion.” I had no idea why I’d said that.
“No, it’s you. And I’ve missed it.”
Warm and woozy from his serene voice and oaky scent, I gave in to my urges and lifted my hands to touch him. They got tangled in the sheets.
“Caiden?” I said, frustrated and breathless.
“Don’t worry.” He moved his mouth to my ear, leaving a tingling trail of warmth. “I would never force you to do anything you don’t want. And I won’t kiss you unless you ask me to.”
I wanted him to—neededhim to.
He moved his lips an inch from mine. “Tell me what you want, Lily.”
I closed my eyes with anticipation. The energy coming off him tickled my mouth with thousands of tiny kisses. I could almost taste his candy breath.
“I can’t think when you’re this close,” I whispered.
The mattress shifted, and Caiden’s warmth and scent left me.
I opened my eyes.
He’d moved to the other side of my body and sat on his knees in the center of the double mattress. He grabbed the covers and tossed them to the end of the bed.
