“I understand it was a dream,” I said. “But my blood is potent enough to heal. I know it is. And it’ll work faster than my other abilities because they don’t work.” I shrugged. “Still.”

Raysa focused on something behind me.

I turned and followed her gaze to the dead orchid. “I tried,” I told her. “Before you came in. My point is, I don’t want Bianca to know about my blood or see me giving it to Caiden. So, do you think you can distract her?”

“I’ll take care of it.” She gave a sharp nod. “I don’t want Bianca to know, either. If your blood is as strong as you think it is, maybe it could help block her spell.” Her tone lowered. “It’s a long shot, but you and Caiden share something special. Destined.” She smiled with the word until she took in my glum expression.

That had nearly ripped my heart from my chest.

A light flashed in the room. I squinted at the far corner, where purple mist formed.

Bianca appeared, looking rough and tattered, as if she’d been in a fight. Cheeks bright red, she panted.

Caiden’s arm was around her shoulder. Clearly, she supported the weight of his maimed body.Oh God. He looked bad.

I edged forward, checking him over. He didn’t seem to be burned like in my dream, but deep lacerations covered his skin and torn clothes.

Raysa sped to his side and helped him to the bed.

Bianca collapsed the second Caiden had been removed.

Not sure what to do, I hesitated before going to Bianca. “Thank you for saving him.” I helped her up and onto a chair. A gash showed on her arm. “Raysa, she’s injured.”

Caiden moaned, the sound filled with pain. My heart tugged.

“You help him. I’ll help her.” Raysa gave me a telling look as we crossed paths.

I nodded in understanding, hoping whatever she had planned worked. I climbed on the bed, giving Caiden’s injuries a once-over, and placed a gentle hand over his heart. The beat was weak and uneven. I glanced at his face and brushed hair from his closed eyes. There was so much I wanted to say.

“It’s going to be okay,” was all I dared. I placed both hands on his chest, closed my eyes, and focused, hoping desperation would be enough to recharge my powers. If not, as soon as Bianca was out of the room, I’d cure him with my blood. I had no doubt it would work.

With a deep inhale, I tried summoning my powers. Caiden’s hand touched mine and my eyes popped open.

“Mine,” he breathed.

My heart leapt with joy and pain.

Behind me, Bianca squealed, “Let me do the spell first.”

I glanced back.

Bianca struggled to pull away from Raysa’s grasp.

“You can’t do it if he’s dead.” Raysa restrained her. “Let Lily heal him first. You need to be healed, as well. I’m taking you to Laken. He came in case we needed extra healers.”

“Why can’t she heal me?” Bianca groaned before going limp in Raysa’s arms, her eyes opened and focused on me.

“She needs her powers for Caiden.” Raysa hoisted her up and slung Bianca’s arm around her shoulder. “It will take everything she has to heal him. I’m bringing you to Laken.” Raysa’s eyes met mine in warning. “We won’t be long.”

I watched them leave before I turned back to Caiden.

His eyes fluttered open, the color dull and almost gray. His dry lips twitched.

I leaned close to his face, knowing I would regret this, but also knowing it would be my last chance. “Shh, I’m here. Don’t speak. Rest.” I brushed my lips over his, savoring the brief moment. Before pulling away, I whispered, “I love you.”

I straightened—my hands still on his chest, his hand still over one of mine—and concentrated. Heat flittered from my fingers to my palms and up to my wrists.

It was working!
