“I vow my heart, body, and soul to you forever. To belong to you and you only for eternity. With you, all things are possible. With you, my life is complete.” I’d memorized the vow but not what happened afterward. “What do we do now?”
“We exchange blood, and I say the vow back to you. But since you’ve already shared yours with me, we’re one step ahead.”
He sat up.
“Don’t,” I said, failing to push him back to the wall.
He moved me to his lap and cupped my face, supporting my head.
“How are you doing this?” Was he feeling better? If so, why was I still weak?
“Love is strength, Lily. Kiss me.”
I leaned into him, wishing I wasn’t so floppy.
He met me halfway and took care of the rest. Our lips moved as fluently as our hearts. Our tongues tangled, heat and strength erupting inside me, and Caiden’s cotton-candy taste had a new flavor—something tangy.
My body softened from his touch but at the same time, grew stronger. I was able to lift my head and sit taller on his lap. I pressed into him and lifted my hands to his hair, lapping the sweet zest from his mouth.
I broke the kiss but kept my lips pressed to his. “What do I taste?”
“My blood.” He smiled and leaned back, his gaze dancing about my face. “I can see you! I don’t know how, but I can. I wish this were more than a dream.”
“It is. It has to be. I can feel you. And you can see me. Doesn’t that mean something?”
“Shh, my turn.” He kissed my lips, silencing me, and then pulled away. “Lily Gracelyn Ellis, daughter of a nature goddess, I vow my heart, body, and soul to you forever. To belong to you and you only for—”
“In the back,” a deep-voice yelled. “The cell in the back. Go quickly.” Footsteps thundered in our direction.
I leapt from the cot. “We have to go.”
“There’s no time.” Caiden flipped it to its side. “Get behind it and stay down.”
“But you said I wasn’t here.”
“Get behind it, Lily,” he demanded. “I’m not taking any chances.”
I crouched on the floor and peeked through a hole in the mattress.
Caiden raced to the door with supernatural speed. He secured it back in place and barricaded it with pieces of broken wood from the cell floor. He stumbled once, and his speed wasn’t as fast as Raysa’s.
Dammit, he’s still too weak.I stood. “Let me help.” I grabbed the table and started for the door.
He put his hand out for me to stop. “Lily, don’t. Go back and hide.”
Heavy pounding shook the door. The remnants Caiden had attached to it crashed onto the floor. He leaned against the wooden barrier, straining to keep it closed.
Terrified, my body vibrated with each thud. I got up and pushed the cot to Caiden.
“Lily, don’t,” he said through clenched teeth.
“You need my help.” I continued pushing the cot toward the door.
The hammering stopped.
I straightened and stared at Caiden. “Why did it stop?”
SLAM.
