Her touch felt like a part of me.
How do I call you?
“We will appear when you have decided.”
But how will I know what’s right for me?
She stood.
You’re leaving? Please, don’t go!I forced myself to sit up and reached for them.
Dad took my hand while my mother waved hers over my body. Silver-lined clouds filled my mind. I relaxed into the mattress, my body light and peaceful.
“Lily Gracelyn Ellis, daughter of a nature goddess,” my mom’s voice sounded regal but warm, “you were born blessed, but your journey is not over yet. Open your heart to those who love you and all they have to offer. Only then will you find peace. Rest, my dear. All will work itself out in time.”
“We love you,” Dad said.
My eyes closed, and I slipped into a deep slumber.
When I woke, my first thought was,Were my parents really here or was it a dream? The scent of lilies lingered faintly. Either that or I was imagining it did.
My gaze caught on a glass filled with a pearl-white fluid on my nightstand. My mother had said I would know how to make it. I imagined what was in the drink and a list of ingredients formed in my mind.
“Itwasreal.” I smiled. The thought of my parents reuniting after so long filled me with mixed emotions. Even though I was elated that they were together, I was sad they couldn’t be together here, with me.
I had no way to contact them. I didn’t even know where they were, or if I’d be happy in a godly realm when there were so many things I loved here—though not at this particular moment. But there was so much of this world I’d yet to experience. Could I leave it all for the dream of having a family? Could I leave Raysa and Caiden?
Caiden! My heart pulled. Was he all right? Did he get away from Dagan? Had he seen me kiss his brother? I cringed. If he had seen us, I doubted he’d be as understanding as the last time. I had to talk to him. I needed to explain.
When I moved, pain shot through my body and sweat formed on my skin. I guzzled the herbal drink, then laid still and breathed deeply. I pictured my body mending and waited to feel healing energy warm my insides. Nothing happened, although I did feel the cooling sensation of the herbal drink spread through my body. Curious, I lifted my arm. My skin didn’t sting when I moved, and the texture appeared completely healed. My previous tan was gone, and my skin looked poreless—new.
Captivated by the pure, smooth texture, I ran my fingers up and down my arm. My skin felt cool to the touch and soft as silk. It had no trace of shimmer, which worried me. I hadn’t been able to conjure my healing powers.
I doubted I had any powers left, based on the look of my skin. Could the trauma of the burns have damaged my abilities? If so, how would I heal Caiden?
The bedroom door swung open.
Raysa walked in, with Briella trailing behind her.
“You’re awake!” She beamed. “How are you feeling?” As she came to the bed, her green eyes widened. “You look perfectly healed andbeautiful. Did you do it?” She lifted a strand of my wavy hair. It still held the same swirls of brown, only now it shined like Raysa’s.
I sat up. Other than feeling slightly stiff, there was no pain. “My mother did it.” I pulled my hair over my shoulder and examined the glossy tendrils.
“You saw her?” Raysa gasped.
“I did.” A smile broke across my face. “It was amazing. My dad is with her. They want me to come live with them.”
Her features fell. “With them?”
“Not right now. There are things I have to do first.” I peered around Raysa to Briella.
She recoiled and bit her lip. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to burn you. I—”
“I know.” I waved her words away. “My parents explained. It’s fine. If you hadn’t almost killed me, I wouldn’t have met my mom or seen my dad.”
“Does your mother share your feelings?” She sounded scared. “I wouldn’t want a nature goddess to be angry with me. Why didn’t you tell me you were her daughter?”
I shrugged and kicked the covers away. “Would it have mattered?” I stretched my legs. How cool would it be if I were taller? Nope, same as before. “Bummer.” I blew a glossy lock from my face.
